Just today I was notified by a friend and fellow artist Christopher Agostino about a wonderful project called the Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project. Please share this with all of your friends and family.

The Project:
The aim of the project is to raise money & awareness in order to support Breast Cancer survivors through the launch of  magazine called “Survivors” and an exhibition of spectacular body painting, painted on Breast Cancer survivors.

The Exhibition:
The images in the series are available as fine art prints and framed pieces with 15% of the profits being donated. They are currently on exhibit at UNCOMMON Gallery; 2713 East Commercial Blvd.; Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308.

The Premiere Issue of “Survivors” Magazine:
The Premiere Issue of “Survivors” Magazine features an extensive article on and images from the Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project founded by Michael D. Colanero.

About the Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project (BCABPP), from the article in Survivor magazine:

“…this unique and collaborative project is a form of art therapy that affects deep and sometimes profound changes in the participant model, but also reaches out beyond them – touching those that see it. Viewers are moved not only by the art itself, but also the energy projected by each of these inspiring survivors.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project: A Fine Art & Photography Essay of Survivors is a project that has been in progress since January of 2009. So far 25 brave breast cancer survivors have come forward to participate. They have come to South Florida from several states around the U.S. and one flew in from Australia – with other interested women in Canada and parts of Europe as well.

The project initially started to create a single image but it was instantly obvious that would never be enough. So, the concept evolved into a calendar – 12 images – but that still wasn’t enough! Then the goal was set… a coffee table book with 50 survivor images accompanied by a page each with the individual survivor bio and story. Perfect!

The project will illustrate cancer’s total lack of any mercy or prejudice regarding who and when it strikes. BCABPP hopes to spotlight survivors from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life, and from as far away as we can attract them.

It includes survivors of all ages, shapes & sizes during various stages of their process of pre, post or non reconstructive options. All the designs are custom made for each survivor and relate in some way to their character traits, personality, passions, interests or other aspects of their story.

All of these are created in a way that also translates to the larger breast cancer experience. Describing a myriad of moods, emotions, thoughts and fears in common to many survivors.

Some themes are light, positive and inspiring while others may be a bit deeper, darker and thought provoking – still others single out a specific issue such as early detection, or genetics.

All are unique individuals with assorted stories – but with many common threads of high points, low points, hurdles, setbacks and milestones making up the tapestry of survivorship.”

Each color combination was designed to the exact specifications of world famous face & body artist and instructor: Jinny (as seen in the video). The large surface of the rectangular cake has equal amounts of each color and are made with the smooth and creamy Paradise AQ make up that blends seamlessly on the skin to a vibrant finish.

Application with Sponge:
Dampen sponge in water, ring out any excess water. Begin by placing the sponge at one end of the Prism cake and swipe the sponge across to the other side, back and forth without lifting the sponge. This helps keep the lines in place. When sponge is fully loaded, place on the area to be designed and “pat” colors onto the skin.

Application with Brush:
Wet the Custom Designed Square Paradise AQ brush (1 inch or 3/4 inch) and place it at one end of the Prisma cake and swipe the brush to the other side, back and forth without lifting the brush. This helps keep the colors in place. When the brush is fully loaded begin your design by placing the brush on the area to be designed and brush the colors on. Remove with soap and warm water.

Hi everyone, my name is Tamara, and I am a new blog writer for Face Painting Tips! Today I’d like to talk about painting on darker skin tones.

Being a person of color (mixed with Irish/Puerto Rican and Black) I have come across some challenges about what colors work best for clients with darker skin tones, so they can achieve that “Wow” factor.

People of color have a variety of beautiful hues and unfortunately not all face paint colors are complimentary to those skin tones. Therefore, colors that may look good on a light skinned person may not have the same effect for a person of a darker skin complexion.

Before I get into which colors to use and avoid, I just wanted to explain a couple things about the color wheel and complimentary colors which will make this easier to explain.

The Color Wheel…
A color wheel will show primary and secondary colors and sometimes tertiary colors. It is handy to keep one on you at a face painting gig!

Primary colors are red, blue, yellow and all other colors are derived from these colors. Secondary colors (orange, violet, green) are colors made by mixing two primary colors. Eg. When you mix yellow and red (primary colors) you get the color orange (secondary color). Tertiary colors are colors made by mixing two secondary colors.

Complimentary Colors…
Complimentary colors are colors that are “opposites”. For example: if you want to find the complimentary color to RED, find the color that is opposite RED on the color wheel and you will find that it is GREEN.
IE: RED is complimentary to GREEN
BLUE is complimentary to ORANGE
YELLOW is complimentary to VIOLET

Colors to Use & Colors to Avoid…
There is no such thing as black skin but skin of multiple hues of tans and browns. Over time I have noticed that some darker skin complexions have a red and yellow undertone. These are the colors that you should stay away from when painting these clients.

• If the model has dark skin – stay away from using the undertone color in the design. Eg. If the model has dark skin with yellow under tone – stay away from using yellow in the design.

• If you’re trying to avoid a particular color like yellow because the model has yellow undertones – use its complimentary color (explained above) instead which is violet.

• Also avoid colors that are too close to the models skin tone. You should be able to see (in the photo to the RIGHT) that the Paradise brown that I used for this client’ teddy bear was not a good choice as it looks like I didn’t even paint her skin.

• People of a darkened skin complexion are of the warm color family, so when face painting these clients you will want to stay away from these colors. eg Warm colors are: yellow, oranges, reds, lighter violets and cool colors are: greens, blues to darker violets.

• My greatest success has been using bright bold neon colors (again choose your colors wisely), or metallic colors.

Sponge Technique Tip…
Another technique I have found to be beneficial to my clients is not to drag your sponge as this lightens the color and there may be some areas that are missed. Instead I stipple my colors in the skin. This makes the colors appear more bold, complete and not as sparse.

Hello Painting friends, today I thought I would share some of my tips for body painting, for those of you who are eager to try it out. Click Here to Ask a Question/Leave a Comment!

Design Preperation:

Generally I find that the more I plan and sketch my designs before painting the better the end result will be. Using a template – an outline of the body, I try out different arrangements to see which will flow well before painting it on the body. This gives me confidence to paint quickly, as I don’t need to spend precious painting time working out the design.

Preperation Tips for the Model:

I ask my models to exfoliate and moisturise well for a few days prior to being painted , this helps the paint go on nicely and will also make it easier to wash off after.

On the day of the paint, I ask my model not to wear any perfume or deoderant, as this can interfere with the makeup. I also ask that they moisturise well before the painting time to allow it to soak into the skin.

I ask them to bring old, dark clothes to wear home after the paint.

Cleaning It Off

Generally I suggest the model rub baby shampoo over her dry body while standing in the shower before turning the water on as this will help to wash the makeup off.

Tools & Products

Typically I use the same make up products as I do for face painting, the paint goes along way.

Brushes as per face painting and also I like to use the Mehron  or Mark Reid body brush  to cover large areas for the base. This differs to face painting where we use a sponge. The sponge is less efficient for bodypainting, brushes are definately the faster way to go!

I also use a fixing spray to set the paint after I have finished so that it will stand up to being worn for a few hours.

Underwear

I prefer briefs with a nylon content as the pure cotton ones are harder to paint over – they absorb much more paint and end up a much lighter colour than the body painted areas.

My preference is  seam -free full briefs or g-strings avilable from Target, I also buy strapless bras of similar material for the more modest events. I purchase these in a flesh colour so that it is easy to paint over, black would be too dark for the paint to work, white would also be suitable. Below is an image from a job I painted for last weekend. I used full brief & bra, which are hardly distinguishable from the skin. I pre-painted the underwear as I only had 3 hours to paint both bodies.

TIP: to keep the underwear in place I glue the tops with pros-aid adheisive.

There are plenty of nipple covers on the market. I avoid the silicone kind, as they are really thick and are very obvious even when painted over. I prefer a thin latex kind, made for body painting, or I also use a thin fabric type that I can get from Bras & things in Australia, see the image below. they paint over really well, and are inexpensive. I am sure you would be able to find similar in other countries.

Its nice to bring a dressing gown along for your model to use, and remember to look after them. Allow them breaks, encourage them to drink and eat and make sure they are warm enough.

Now you’re ready to paint!

Go for it and have some fun, you will only learn by trying it out.

Hello Face Painting friends.

I had a lovely job a few weeks ago where I painted a family for a Masquerade Party. I had around 10 minutes per design including talking to them about what they were wearing so my design would complement thier clothes, so these were fairly fast designs…Please note that the family had to travel a way to their event so they left thier clothes and lipstick off until they were there, so they are slightly unfinished.

I have posted some pictures to inspire you with your own mask designs.

Lace Mask-a pretty design to complement a white dress with black sash.

Here are a few tips to help you create your own mask designs:

- Use the figure 8 on its side as guidence, this will give you a good indication of a flattering mask shape that suits all face shapes.

- Use techniques you are comfortable with. This will allow you to confidently create a design on the spot, showcasing your strengths.

- Practice working out designs on your practice head to get an idea of how the shapes will flow on the face.

Filigree Butterfly, a jewel inspired mask

- Have some fun and replicate the outfit worn by the person.

- Add liquid glitter, gems and even feathers for extra glamour.

- Google “masks” in google images online to get inspired by a huge array of mask designs.

- think outside the square – a snake wrapped around the eyes could become a suitable mask.

Kim Baker has made another video tutorial you guys are going to like. It’s a Dragon Body Painting design that can be done on the arm sort of like a tattoo as seen in the video or it can be modified and used on the face.

It’s quite detailed and a design that you would use when you don’t have a long line.

The Australian Body Art Awards (ABAA) was a great success last month – it is always wonderful to be surrounded by Face and Body artists. I enjoyed teaching, competing and learning. I was also delighted to win First place in the Special FX Body Painting competition. This design is suitable for all boys and girls, just change the colours, add some flowers/stars & you can make it different for everyone! This design is made easy with your mini split cakes and a large flat brush – I used a 1″ flat brush in this video, a 3/4″ flat brush will be perfect too.

Hello Everybody,

I am  a big fan of one stroke face painting with split cakes, it makes face painting so fast and beautiful! It’s great to see you can now buy the Diamond FX Split Cakes on here. Today I have  put together two flower step by steps for you to try, using the (one stroke) Mini Split Cakes and a 3/4 Inch Flat Brush.

The first design, Frangipani, can be painted using the DFX Mini Sunset Split-Cake, just use the side with the white for this design (don’t pick up the violet). You can also use the DFX Mini Jungle Split-Cake for the leaves in both designs. You can use the DFX Mini Party Split-Cake for  the rose design (don’t pick up the violet).

Step 1: Load sponge with golden yellow and apply to inside of eye. Add pink to the other end of the sponge and add this color next to the golden yellow and blend.

Step 3: Add butterfly head, body and antennae using a #4 round brush and black. The body is a teardrop.

Step 4: Using the same brush and black, outline the wings, coming inwards at regular intervals. Add a curly-Q at the bottom.

Step 5: Add inner black lines- “M’s and W’s” and fill in between with black.

Step 7: As a variation, add long tear drops or swirls and curls on the wings in black.

Earlier this year at FABAIC in Orlando I had the pleasure of meeting one of my favorite artists Christopher Agostino. Also met up with him again at a face painting jam when I was in New York in June. One of the cool unique things Christopher does when he goes out to paint is he doesn’t have a display board with designs photos…he asks each ‘model’ if they’d like to be “nice” or “spooky”. Face painting isn’t just for the little ones anymore … with sophisticated artwork from local talent Karol DiPietro, anyone can enjoy a transformation. From a tiger or super hero to a princess, flower or butterfly, designs are limited only by the imagination. The painting isn’t limited to just cheek art, but extends to beautiful elaborate faces. She knew she could deliver that level of art locally, and it fueled her desire to become a professional face painter. She began researching and learning as much as she could absorb through the Internet, face painting forums, as well as other face painters and teaching videos. She started doing children’s birthday parties and then created her website to showcase the work and list events she will be at publicly.

The unique art form caught on like wildfi re. Make A Face was fi rst established in 2003 and has grown tremendously over the past fi ve years. This past May she attended the Face & Body Art International Convention (FABAIC) in Orlando, Florida to learn more about face & body painting as a business and bring her business to a different level. Hi everyone!

I recently got a call to do a school festival a few weeks ago, to paint about 300+ kids!

I just about fell out of my chair when I heard how many.

I have never painted that many people at one time!

But I never back down from a challenge and I quickly taught my 14 year old sister to paint a few simple faces.

We chose to limit our choices to: Tiger, Zombie, Rainbow Butterfly, Party Eyes, Snakes & Flowers.

When we arrived at the event, we had our own pavillion and we lined up the picnic tables along the sides of the building and which created a large walk way.

As we started to paint, my sister took the right side and I took the left.  We lined up as many as 25 kids at a time and went down the line with one color and then came back for details and once again for glitter.

We painted everyone, in three and a half hours–we were hired for 4 hours!  The parents were very impressed by our meathod of getting everyone painted so quickly.  They have already booked me again for next year!

I hope this helps anyone who needs to know how to paint a large group very quickly!

“First Time Face Painter”

My story.

I have been clowing for years now and found face art very scary and though I tried couple times it just seem so involved.

I booked a party a couple weeks ago and told the lady that hired me for her child’s party I did not do face painting, she was very insistant and gave me a book with paints in it.

I finally agreed and thought “Oh no”!!!  Well I had the one brush and a plastic cup of water and started and wow I was thrilled.

The paint was great and went on bright and dried fast.  I had done 15 of the designs in just a few minutes.  I went out and bought it.  It was the Wolfe brand.

“Thoughts on Surviving Facepainting Competitions”

I’ve entered a few facepainting competitions. I’ve even won a few on them. Some I thought I might have a chance of winning. Some I never would have guessed I would have won. It took quite a while to even consider entering, but with fear and trepidation I decided to force myself to enter competitions from time to time.

I found that different kinds of competitions have provided different experiences. On-line competitions are less stressful when I’m producing the artwork since if an idea doesn’t come out the way I wanted it to, I’d try again another day. There are no time constraints when paintng, only a deadline for entry of the work. Also involved are the extra factors of photography skills to document the artwork and computer skills to submit it.

On-line competition artwork tends to live on for long periods of time. That can be an asset, or not, depending on how you feel you fared compared to other entries & if your skills are progressing way beyond what you submitted. Some on-line competitions allow for the artist to remove their entry for a fee.  Depending on the competition, the time involved between submitting the artwork & finding out who the winners are, can be short or quite long (even over a year).

Competitions at conferences can be very stressful due to limitations on production & sometimes setup time. Some allow spectators to watch the=2 0competition. Usually there is a relatively short time between the competition & the announcing of winners, a few days at the most. Having well organized competitions helps to decrease the stress on competitors. Good light, space, & environmental control, or lack of them, can affect the competitor. Clear rules, judge type & criterion posted well before the conference are assets.

The first time I entered an on-line competition; I nearly hyperventilated as I pressed send! LOL! I wasn’t laughing then. It was so intimidating to me. I still stress, but less each time, as it is getting easier and easier emotionally, though my new computer is challenging me to get the best level of quality within the range allowed. I always seem a few units over the range or way below. I will conquer that challenge eventually.

On site competitions were always exceedingly stressful to me, especially line work, as I always shook. I never felt I could do my best. The only time I didn’t in the past was one competition in which we could paint whenever and wherever we wanted as long as we presented our model at the given time. I painted in an isolated lobby casually chatting with the model and his wife. There were no time pressures. I was able to feel like I was jamming, rather than competing.

Over the last 2 years, I forced myself to compete at each conference I attended, trying to desensitize myself. More than one person had told me that you never relax. I=2 0believed them until last month at FABAIC. I was a little anxious before the competition started. However when I started painting an age progression, I was finally able to relax. I had a wonderfully encouraging and cooperative model, but I had had great ones before as well.

Was it because I chose a type of technique that I didn’t think had any chance of being considered a winning entry since it was so limited in color range?

Was it because I chose my design as a learning experience and challenge for myself rather than looking at it as something that might appeal to the majority of the type of judges there? (At some competitions the judges were professional instructors, at others my peers at that level, at others many beginning painters, advanced painters, or a mix of levels.

I took the preparation and process seriously, but actually found myself smiling and even laughing sometimes during the FABAIC competition. All those things were factors Mostly, I think I finally competed for the joy of the experience. If I had placed, it would have been a bonus. But the process, among so much inspiration and talent, was the reason to be there. I was finally able to enjoy it. I encourage everyone to press through too and be part of competitions in the near future.

“Step By Step Foxy Mask Face Paint Design” By Harmony Roth Shabtai

1. start with an orange triangle above each brow and continue the outer end towards the ear from there you draw a diagonal line to the mouth. you go over the mouth in order to “close” the mask.

2. paint the nose and half of the cheeks in white.

3. fill the lower part of the mask with orange and draw a thick line on each side of the nose. continue that line under the eyebrow.

4. outine in black the mask and each eye. you can add glitter or golden lines as highlights.

5.you can add white for some more

highlights and depth to the mask.

NZ Body Art Awards2009′s premier NZ face painter named

Auckland professional face painter Jane Ellis has won the second annual New Zealand International Face Painting Competition, presented by Youthtown, with a piece inspired by the hit movie Kung Fu Panda. She picked up the award at the NZ ColourFest at the Lakehouse Arts Centre in Takapuna, Auckland, on Saturday. The festival still drew a large crowd of moving-art enthusiasts, despite the rain.

Jane Ellis painted her 10-year-old son Jack for the winning piece and is no stranger to turning children into the creatures of their imaginations . . . Jane runs Rainbow Rascals, a face painting and party business which has been delighting Auckland children for six years. Jack is used to his mum practising on him – he’s her main model and Ellis says face painting has always been a nice mother-son activity. She says he is very supportive and has always been her number one fan:

“To him I’m the best painter in the universe – so he was really proud.”

Jane Ellis is a former kindergarten relief teacher and says she loves painting children under 10, as they have great imaginations and are like “moving canvases that laugh”. She says winning the New Zealand International Face Painting Competition is “huge, absolutely huge” as she knows just how talented the competition is. Ellis says she had to tell her son to pinch her as she was levitating off the ground when her name was announced.

“All the other artists who were there, I massively respect and admire. I know their work, so to be there on the day and be placed first among my peers is huge,”she says.

Jane Ellis says while face painting is her business, it’s also her passion.

The contest also attracted Melbourne artist Maria Mormile, who was drawn across the ditch by the opportunity to increase her competition experience ahead of the World Body Painting Festival in Austria.

A mask making competition run by Youthtown was another highlight of the NZ ColourFest, as pre-schoolers, primary and intermediate school kids whipped up creations ranging from dragons to princesses.

The NZ International Face Painting competition is a pre-cursor to the New Zealand Body Art Awards, which will be held for the fourth year running on July 25. This year’s awards return to the Bruce Mason Centre and will continue the Fantasia Asia theme showcased by face painters on Saturday.

A couple weeks back I had the chance to go to the New South Wales Body Painting Competition (Presented by Tim Gratton)…I had only heard about it the night before and only because I was asked to model. I didn’t end up modelling but I went anyway and had a great time catching up with some friends!

Fancy a qualification in painting funny faces?

The country’s first accredited course in face painting has been set up on Wearside for students to brush up their skills.

Washington woman Karen Routledge, an education and funding consultant, has teamed up with Sunderland Community Voluntary Service (CVS), to deliver the course for the Open College Network.

Karen, who has been face painting for fun for 20 years, was holding a training course in fund-raising when one of the women asked if she would go along to a community group.

She said: “I thought she meant would I go along and do some face painting for an event, but then she said that actually she wanted me to teach the others how to face paint.”

Since then Karen has held several sessions in the region, which have always been fully booked and has held courses in other parts of the country.

She said: “It is mainly a practical-based course providing exercises in the art itself and proves that everyone can face paint successfully and have fun, too.

“Although mainly designed for community groups and schools the course is also attracting bookings from businesses, parents and individuals wishing to pursue face painting as a career.”

As part of the course each delegate will receive a professional face painting kit for more than 700 faces including paints, brushes, sponges and display photographs.

All practising is done on child-size model heads during the day-long course, which is open for ages 14 and over.

Karen is planning the next course to take place in Washington on Saturday, December 8, and will be doing another course at Sunderland CVS centre in the New Year.

The course costs £99 including the Open College Network Accreditation and Certificate and the professional face painting kit, which is worth about £60.

How a Baldwin Artist Works his Magic

Jay Hugues of Baldwin became a Japanese demon. Jeannea Whitely of Port Washington was transformed into a beautiful bird, and 9-year-old John Jerome of Queens became a monkey king – an image from ancient Chinese opera masks. All it took was some skillful brushstrokes and about three minutes each.

These are just three of the hundreds of faces painted at Port Washington’s recent Bar Beach FamilyFest by Christopher Agostino, his wife, Lorraine, and two employees of his company, Transformation FacePainting.

The words “face painting” usually conjure images of rainbows and butterflies on the cheek. Not so of Transformation Facepainting, where every face is a full-face work of art and every face is different.

“We think of face painting as an art and not a decoration,” said Agostino, of Baldwin, founder and artistic director of the 15-person company. “I don’t want to put something on somebody that only is a decoration, that doesn’t actually change their appearance dramatically enough that you see them as somebody different, or it doesn’t actually change the way they feel about themselves.”

Agostino studies the rich history of painting faces and uses the likes of Picasso, Chinese Opera masks, African tribal masks and Japanese kabuki masks as inspiration. Even if asked to paint a tiger, he and members of his company will paint it in a unique style.

“I’m a painter, and I used to paint on canvas,” Agostino said. “Now, I paint almost exclusively on people, and they became my canvas.”

Face painting is an ancient art. “Before we painted a cave wall, we painted ourselves,” Agostino said. “One of the oldest images we find of humans on cave walls and the like show humans with markings on their skin or humans wearing things like animal masks.”

Agostino has written a book, “Transformations! The Story Behind the Painted Faces,” that gives the background on the designs he uses. It was published last year by Kryolan, the company that manufactures the makeup he uses. (To order a copy, go to www.agostinoarts .com or call 516-771-8086.)

Agostino, 48, has been painting faces for 30 years. He started off painting clown faces as a young performer in a group called The Young People’s Theater Program – an offshoot of the performing arts foundation in Huntington – that used to be an off-Broadway professional house, he said. After painting clown faces for a bicentennial celebration, he and some fellow performers needed extra money, so they painted faces at Adventureland, an amusement park in East Farmingdale. He then went to California and painted faces on Venice Beach. He came back to the New York area and has been painting faces at public and private events ever since. His team charges between $250 and $1,000 for an event, depending on the size of the crowd and whether a stage show is included.

“After a few years, I also started focusing more on not just making a face that looks good but thinking how painted faces affect the events I was working at,” Agostino said.

Agostino studies face painting through books and by going to museums. His work shows his studies. Whether he’s painting in the Nuba style from the Sudan or a tiger in the Cubist style of Picasso, every face is different.

“New York has great collections of masks and photographs in the museums. I go to them, and I sketch things, and I come home and turn them into face designs,” Agostino said.

Agostino and his company have been painting faces at the Bronx Zoo every day over the summer for 14 years, charging between $10 and $15 a face. That’s where Mary Mahaffey, assistant to the commissioner of parks and recreation for the Town of North Hempstead, saw him.

“We had to have him” for the Bar Beach FamilyFest, Mahaffey said. “He’s … unique.”

The theatrical makeup Agostino uses is water-based, so it can be easily washed off. One of the reasons he wrote the book was to have something permanent from his work.

“I’m in a very impermanent art form,” Agostino said. “Everything I paint washes off at the end of the day.”
