Each color combination was designed to the exact specifications of world famous face & body artist and instructor: Jinny (as seen in the video). The large surface of the rectangular cake has equal amounts of each color and are made with the smooth and creamy Paradise AQ make up that blends seamlessly on the skin to a vibrant finish.

Application with Sponge:
Dampen sponge in water, ring out any excess water. Begin by placing the sponge at one end of the Prism cake and swipe the sponge across to the other side, back and forth without lifting the sponge. This helps keep the lines in place. When sponge is fully loaded, place on the area to be designed and “pat” colors onto the skin.

Application with Brush:
Wet the Custom Designed Square Paradise AQ brush (1 inch or 3/4 inch) and place it at one end of the Prisma cake and swipe the brush to the other side, back and forth without lifting the brush. This helps keep the colors in place. When the brush is fully loaded begin your design by placing the brush on the area to be designed and brush the colors on. Remove with soap and warm water.

Hi everyone, my name is Tamara, and I am a new blog writer for Face Painting Tips! Today I’d like to talk about painting on darker skin tones.

Being a person of color (mixed with Irish/Puerto Rican and Black) I have come across some challenges about what colors work best for clients with darker skin tones, so they can achieve that “Wow” factor.

People of color have a variety of beautiful hues and unfortunately not all face paint colors are complimentary to those skin tones. Therefore, colors that may look good on a light skinned person may not have the same effect for a person of a darker skin complexion.

Before I get into which colors to use and avoid, I just wanted to explain a couple things about the color wheel and complimentary colors which will make this easier to explain.

The Color Wheel…
A color wheel will show primary and secondary colors and sometimes tertiary colors. It is handy to keep one on you at a face painting gig!

Primary colors are red, blue, yellow and all other colors are derived from these colors. Secondary colors (orange, violet, green) are colors made by mixing two primary colors. Eg. When you mix yellow and red (primary colors) you get the color orange (secondary color). Tertiary colors are colors made by mixing two secondary colors.

Complimentary Colors…
Complimentary colors are colors that are “opposites”. For example: if you want to find the complimentary color to RED, find the color that is opposite RED on the color wheel and you will find that it is GREEN.
IE: RED is complimentary to GREEN
BLUE is complimentary to ORANGE
YELLOW is complimentary to VIOLET

Colors to Use & Colors to Avoid…
There is no such thing as black skin but skin of multiple hues of tans and browns. Over time I have noticed that some darker skin complexions have a red and yellow undertone. These are the colors that you should stay away from when painting these clients.

• If the model has dark skin – stay away from using the undertone color in the design. Eg. If the model has dark skin with yellow under tone – stay away from using yellow in the design.

• If you’re trying to avoid a particular color like yellow because the model has yellow undertones – use its complimentary color (explained above) instead which is violet.

• Also avoid colors that are too close to the models skin tone. You should be able to see (in the photo to the RIGHT) that the Paradise brown that I used for this client’ teddy bear was not a good choice as it looks like I didn’t even paint her skin.

• People of a darkened skin complexion are of the warm color family, so when face painting these clients you will want to stay away from these colors. eg Warm colors are: yellow, oranges, reds, lighter violets and cool colors are: greens, blues to darker violets.

• My greatest success has been using bright bold neon colors (again choose your colors wisely), or metallic colors.

Sponge Technique Tip…
Another technique I have found to be beneficial to my clients is not to drag your sponge as this lightens the color and there may be some areas that are missed. Instead I stipple my colors in the skin. This makes the colors appear more bold, complete and not as sparse.

I’ve had many requests about how to paint gold/silver metallic ‘live’ statues so I decided to write a blog post about it! This is quite simple to do and it looks amazing! We hand pick all the supplies that we sell and the best products to work with to achieve this shiny metallic look is without a doubt – Mehron Metallic Powders and Mixing Liquid.

The Face & Body…

Mix Mehron Metallic Powder with Mehron Mixing Liquid. Use about 2-3 times as much liquid to powder and make sure it is thoroughly blended before applying, eg. no lumps.

You must only mix a little at a time as the alcohol evaporates and will not keep for long if pre-mixed, so mix a little at a time as you work.

You will need 1 bottle of powder and 1 bottle of Mixing Liquid 4.5oz per slim female body, but its a good idea to have one in reserve in case of spills or accidents.

The mixture can be applied with a brush or a sponge, though a sponge will absorb lots of the product, which is quite wasteful, and not give such a smooth finish as a brush.

If you are covering large areas, such as a whole body, you will need a large brush.

We recommend Mark Reid’s Body Brush.

When you have finished painting, you can polish with a soft powder puff or cloth.

Because the finish using the mixing mediums is resistant to touch, it is also resistant to glitter adhering, so you would need to use an adhesive for glitter to stick.

The Hair…
The product can also be applied to hair, but we would not recommend that it is put

on bleached hair as there have been issues with a green tinge lingering afterwards.

Use the same mix as above.

The Fabric/Clothes…

The product can also be applied to fabrics and props so that everything matches.

Use the same mix as above!

TIP: When painting a model from head to toe, make sure to get them to bend their elbows/knees as you paint them so you can cover all the creases properly – if you don’t you will see the patches as soon as they bend!!

TIP 2: If you want an amazingly shiny, chrome-like finish -  mix the powders with an oil such as Baby Oil, Vegetable Oil, Olive Oil etc. It can be applied very easily using your hands, kind of like a massage. This will look incredible, but be aware – it will also be very oily! Anything that your model touchs will be affected and it will take lots and lots of shower gel/soap and hot water to remove it from the skin.

NOTE: If skin is sensitive it should not be applied near the eye/mouth/nose area because of the alcohol in the mixing liquid – alternatively the metallic powders can be used dry in those areas.

Hello Everybody,

Wow can you believe it’s February already!  This month I am very excited to be an instructor at the Australian Body Art Awards Convention. This event began last year as a Face and Body painting competition, held in Melbourne, Australia, and has grown this year into a bigger competition with more categories to enter and a 3 day convention with additional pre and post convention classes being offered by a host of talented International Instructors including: Yolanda Bartram, Lucy  Bruillard and Christina Davison. I love all of the feedback and responses I get to my posts, and I really enjoy hearing about how you all do things, I have learnt from some of your tips and I am sure many others have too. This month I have decided to open up a topic that is usually a big discussion in my beginners class, the issue of Hygiene when face painting. I will post some of my tips on the topic and would love to hear your thoughts and ideas too.

common sense: plays an important role in hygiene matters. as I am sure most of you are aware that it is important not to paint over broken skin/cold sores to minimise the spread of contageous conditions. Even if the parent assures you its ok! discreetly offering to paint on the arm or elswhere instead so that the child still has a design without feeling embarressed is a tactful way to manage these situations.

regular kit cleaning: so that the paints are wiped clean, my brushes and equipent are regularly cleaned, steralized and air-dried. Throw out broken and untitdy items. This not only is essential for professional presentation, but it is also more hygienic and parents will notice that you take care.

sponges: Personally I like to use a fresh sponge per child. I find the benefit not only in presenting a hygienic approach, which parents have commented favourably on, but that it suits my technique too. I like load up my sponges with colours suitable  for the particular design and find that they end up with lots of colours on them anyway so I couldn’t really re-use them if I wanted to!

antibacterial gel: its great to have this on hand, regularly cleaning your hands with this between children will help to minimise the spread of bacteria.

Hello Everybody,

I am  a big fan of one stroke face painting with split cakes, it makes face painting so fast and beautiful! It’s great to see you can now buy the Diamond FX Split Cakes on here. Today I have  put together two flower step by steps for you to try, using the (one stroke) Mini Split Cakes and a 3/4 Inch Flat Brush.

The first design, Frangipani, can be painted using the DFX Mini Sunset Split-Cake, just use the side with the white for this design (don’t pick up the violet). You can also use the DFX Mini Jungle Split-Cake for the leaves in both designs. You can use the DFX Mini Party Split-Cake for  the rose design (don’t pick up the violet).

I had some fun painting special FX with my son recently, we are helping out with a school project for my nephew. It’s certainly something that the boys (and girls too) really love!

I get quite  a few requests to paint bruises and cuts on boys and girls when face painting and I thought I’d share some ideas with you. Modelled by my son Felix.

Bruises:

this can be used for black eyes and bruises on the body.

1. Wet the sponge and squeeze out the water so it is slightly damp. The paint is best applied only slightly wet so it goes on lightly.

2. Dab the end of the sponge in the purple, dab under the eye, so it looks like bags under the eyes, also dab the outer corner of the eye and a little over the top.

3. Use the other end of the sponge and dab yellow on the brow of the eye and under the outer corner, this is to make it look puffy.

4. Dab some red onto the sponge and add a little under the bottom of the eye, and the side of the nose.

5. Lightly add some black over some of the purple areas

6. Ahhh beautiful! A shiner.

Experiment with the wax to create wounds any where, slash wounds, bullet holes, try having a nail or object sticking out of the wax!!

1. Roll the wax and sit on skin, dip your finger in water and smooth out the edges to blend into the skin. Also use the spatula and your finger nail.

2. Use the spatula to cut a groove into the wax. Paint a thin black line in here to make the cut look deeper.

3. Get some cake blood on the sponge, a bit wetter than for the black eye, and dab lightly onto the wax and around the wound a bit. You can also sponge some on the skin to create a graze.

4. Add some black lines to the graze. Use the liquid blood to ooze from the wound and graze….

1. Flatten a small bit of tooth wax.

2. Dry your tooth with your finger and squish the wax onto the tooth.

I used snazaroo products for the special FX, the water based wax, blood and cake blood are wonderful. I used my standard paint kit for the black eye.

Today I am going to talk about how I seat my model for Face Painting. I notice that all of the painters I work with do this a bit differently, so I look forward to your comments about what works for you.

I generally like to stand while I paint, while it can be a little tiring, I find that I have great stamina after years of doing it and can stand for very long periods. Sometimes I use an adjustable office stool, on wheels, if I am going to be painting for a very long period or for several days at the one event.

I like to stand as it means I can move around a bit while working, I like to stand to the front of the model and also to the right side of the model to make painting that side of the face easier ( I am right handed) This is why I use the stool with wheels, so I can move around the model. I generally use the stool for painting small children and stand for the older children and adults.

I seat my model on a tall directors chair, I have them sit close to me, right at the front of the chair. I have a little step that I have them put their feet on, adults too!  The step is also for them to climb up to the chair with out me needing to lift them, If they need lifting I ask the parents to do it as I want to look after my back. Really little children can’t reach the step with their feet, that’s fine, most can.

Once they are seated with their feet on the step, I ask them to put their hands on their knees. This position keeps them very stable and still. Having the hands on knees also helps the child to relax and let their head go back for me to paint them. If their hands are elsewhere eg. behind them, I notice it is much more difficult for their head to relax back.

This position really works for me, sometimes I have to remind the child while I am painting them to do one of the things (feet firmly flat on the step, hands on knees)

I took a picture over the weekend of a child “in the position”. You can see my set up too -  I fit all of my gear into a Fat Max, which I use as my table, once packed up I only have this pull along and carry  the tall chair  – very portable!

“Make The Child Happy” – SF Competition Sent in by Lisa Leyes

Dear Philadelphia:

I am a volunteer facepainter at the Hospital for SickKids in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  I have a tip for you.

I cannot carry around a jar or cup of water to wash my brushes off in, as of spreading infectious diseases.  I carry two small spray bottles:

One is for spraying the PAINT with water.  This makes the colors very intense.  I paint on the child’s face, wipe off on a paper towel, and dip in rubbing alcohol.  The second spray bottle holds rubbing alcohol.  Everything in my kit must be clean, clean, clean.  I go up to hematology/oncology sometimes, and I must have a sterile kit.  My brushes never touch a paint after touching a child’s face.  I carry a lot of brushes and natural sea sponges, as there are lots of latex allergies in the hospital.  The rubbing alcohol dries very quickly in the brushes.  I wait a few minutes before using again on a child’s face.

I have the best volunteer job in the whole world. All I do is make people happy. My job description is as follows:

“Make the child happy”.

If that means that I paint Grandma like a tiger, then that is what I do.

I also do special effects.  It seems the most innocent, happy boys want to have the most evil, disgusting, fake pus, fake blood dripping fake wounds to scare the nursing staff.  The nurses here are pretty calm, so I go to them and ask them to emote.  The boys revel in the stir they create in the staff with their very real looking black eyes, bloody noses, chunks of ripped up skin, fake gangrene, etc.  It is a delight to make them happy.

I am glad I hooked up with your website. I hope to share more small tips with you.

“Face Painting Retreat”

I just took a face painting class taught by Jodi Carr in Virginia 2 weekends ago and had the most incredible time!  Myself and 6 other women absorbed everything Jodi had to say and demonstrate for 2 full days.

What heaven to have 2 days straight of nothing but face painting!  We stayed overnight at Carol Turman’s house who hosted the class and jammed that night.  I plan to make it a yearly retreat, if not more!  Here are a few pics of what I painted today on my kids based on what Jodi demo’d.  I have a bunch more to try this week- if I can get my kids to sit still  long enough!

The biggest trick I learned, yet soooooo simple is how to make a perfect teardrop: really load the brush (I had not been taking several swipes), twirl as you load to make a fine tip, start with the tip every so lightly touching down and then add pressure directly down- it makes a great shaped tear drop.  I had been dragging my brush along into the tear drop shape, when all it really needed was a press downwards (brush is perpendicular to skin).

I started face painting for fun last November, starting with Philadelphia’s great ebook.  I have done a handful of bday parties and am getting ready to dive in a bit more.  I work part-time from home and have 2 small kids, so finding the time to paint is the trick!  It is my new great love.

Tips for those of you who want to read them instead:

1. A reader of mine, Stacie Smith sent in this tip actually! “I’ve discovered for storing brushes (after they are dry) is a drinking straw holder – the kind that lifts the straws up from a cylinder and then sets back down into it.? That way the bristles are safe if packed away for transport.” Pretty cool idea, huh?

2. After face painting for the day, don’t just rinse your brushes in water, wash them with soap. You’d be surpised how much paint comes out of your brushes! Just rinsing them won’t get everything out, you really need to use soap. You can use laundry soap or you might want to try DaVinci cosmetic grade soap.

3. I can’t remember who I received this tip off but its a good one: ”Get some cotton (I use embroidery thread as it’s easier to untie at the end) and gently tie it round the bristles to the shape you want starting at the handle end. Tie off carefully (remember you’ve gotta get the thread off again without having to cut it so damaging the bristles). leave over night to dry (this could be a few days in cooler weather) untie cotton and your brushes should be back to their proper shape. They’ll never be “new” again but they will be useable.”

Some face painters stand while they paint, and others prefer to be seated. Either way you need to make sure that you are comfortable, thats the main thing.

It is very easy to do long-term damage to your back by holding an uncomfortable position for hours, and face painting is an activity that can easily cause repetitive-stress injuries.

Thats why I’m writing this post.

It’s easy to get caught up in the fun of face painting and forget to look after yourself.

You really need to organize your work space to minimize the amount of repetitive bending, stretching, and twisting that you have to do while painting, to avoid repetitive-stress injuries.

So remember to stop and take a break to stretch after every few paintings and read the following notes on how to minimize any negative impacts on your body whether you prefer to stand or sit.

If you prefer to sit…

When it comes to chairs, you might want to get a chair with adjustable height for the model, so you can adjust the seat accordingly depending on whether they’re tall or short. It’s much easier when the models face is at the same height as yours.

When you’re sitting down, always paint in a comfortable position, don’t lean forward too much because you can hurt your neck and back, make the model lean forward if anything, (they only have to do it for 5 minutes, you have a lot longer)

Directors chairs are really popular.

If you prefer to stand…

You definately need to wear comfortable and supportive shoes. Make sure to sit your model at the right height so that you don’t need to bend or lean and can keep good posture at all times.

Want to make your face painting designs look more 3D? They’ll instantly look more professional! Here’s the trick… it’s all about shadow and light. Practice with something simple, like say a red circle. Paint a red circle then think about where you want the light to be shining from, and where on the circle its shining. Then paint that part a lighter red (or even white), and from that point outwards let the red gradually get darker.

It should begin to look like a sphere instead of just a circle, then once you’re confident with this face painting technique, you can apply it to parts of your favorite face painting designs!

Looking for more ways to save time when you’re face painting? Well, why wouldn’t you…after all, the more time you save, the quicker you become, and then you’ll be able to paint more faces right?

So here’s my quick tip for today…

If you’re using cake paints that need water to apply, use a spray bottle to moisten it. It’s alot quicker than constantly loading your brush with water and then transferring that to the paint and its alot easier!

Sponges are an amazing tool… when used correctly that is! Sponges are great for applying base coats with speed, but alot of face painters have the problem of not being able to apply the face paint without creating streaks.

If you don’t want streaks, just follow these simple instructions:

* First things first, you’ll get getter results with high density make up sponges, so make sure you’re using the right kind of sponges for the job. Buy quality make up sponges here.

* When painting a base coat, don’t dunk the sponge in water! If your sponge is too wet, the paint will streak for sure! Infact I’ve found that it’s better to just leave your sponge dry.

* If you’re using cake paints, wet the paint (instead of the sponge.) I like to use a spray bottle to wet the paint, just a couple sprays and, I get the correct consistency. And if you’re using liquid paints, then you don’t need to add more water. This will ensure that you’ve got the right amount of paint versus water.

* Fully load your sponge with paint on the side of the sponge you’re going to use, don’t leave any gaps because this will cause streaks.

* Now that your tools are ready, make sure that you dab the paint on, don’t drag it across the face too much because this can also cause yucky streaks especially if you’ve got too much water in the mix!

But remember to experiment, I know that there are other face painters who can make it work by spraying the sponge instead of the paint… you’ve really got to try it a couple different ways to find out what works for you!

Happy Halloween! The most fun, creative and spooky occasion of the year is finally here! Many of you will be out trick or treating no doubt, and some of you will be attending Halloween parties if not tonight than this weekend.

One of my favorite halloween make up ideas are painting Stitches! And we were recently asked how to paint stitches on the blog, so here’s how you do it!

Stitches work great on any part of the body – arms, legs, face, neck… where ever!

And its easier than you think, to make it look really cool!

Firstly, get a small thin brush and paint a red line with dots like in the picture.

Then use black face/body paint to paint a curved line between each pair of dots. (Makesure the lines are curved, to give it a more 3d effect.) Then paint a black line right next to the red line, overlapping a little.

The last thing you need to do get some white paint, and paint slightly over the black curved lines in the picture… and thats all there is to it!

Here’s a couple halloween make up ideas that I came up with just this last weekend! My daughters, their cousins and friends had a fun halloween party, and I was busy face painting as usual.

The mask on the girl has a kind of a gothic feel to it (very popular with tweens and teens) and it uses the ‘tear drop technique’. To learn this technique watch this video:

We also put some black feathers in her hair and she wore a pretty black dress with fish net stockings. Simple home made costumes are so much fun, and it lets you and your child be creative! 

The design on the boy is so quick and simple, two squiggly lines for a moustache and to curved lines for some menacing eyebrows is what he requested, and he loved it! Kids tend to pick easy designs, so always ask them what they want.

Today I’m going to share with you a face painting technique that I really like to use, it’s a technique that will allow you to quickly paint simple face paint designs like a flower or a butterfly with a beautiful two toned effect!

(Thanks to a lady named Jan who left a comment on our blog with this idea, we appreciate all the comments, they inspire us to put up more posts!)

*First, load your brush with the color that you want the core of the flower to be, we used yellow in the photo. (But you can use whatever color you want.)

*Then dip just the tip of the brush in a darker color, we used red. About 1/4 of the brush.

*Then all you have to do is press the brush (tip facing out) 5 or 6 times to make petals.

This will give you beautiful multi-tone petals!

You can also use this technique on other face paint designs like the butterfly, and if you want you can outline the design in black with a small thin brush:

First rule for all face painters that are starting out and are slighty frustrated with their results in terms of blending paint colors, PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT.

Truely this is the only way, you must experiment with your choice of face paints. Learn their limitations, explore the paints variations of color and texture. Try different ways of application with sponges, fingers, and different size brushes.

Practise blending paints on your hand, start with a simple to color then work your way up to more. Once you understand the mechanics of blending, you can apply it to other areas of creating depth and shading to your face painting design.

I recommend that you never wet your sponge, too much water will give you streaks and will not dry smooth but textured (unless this is the desired effect you wanted). Instead of having a wet brush or sponge, use a spray bottle and wet the paint (if you have cakes).

With blending paints you must work quickly, have your colors ready before you start. Sponge on the first color then apply the next color next to it, the first should still be damp so when you bring the second color towards the first they should start to mix as you dab.

Sometime you will then need to go over with the first color bring that back onto the second. The main thing is to practise with the face paint you have, try the ratio of water, as well as the pressure you apply to your sponging.

Have fun, don’t stress and you should be able to achieve the effects you are trying to get.

Here’s one of my favorite face painting ideas – combining face paint and ‘everyday’ make up/cosmetics.

If done right it can look amazing and it can save you time because you don’t have to wait for it to dry like you would with face paints. So if you’re looking for something new to add to your face painting, or you want to stretch yourself as an artist then you’ll enjoy these face painting ideas, so keep reading!

* Blush can be used to make rosy cheeks on a bunny rabbit or a princess face painting design instead using pink face paint. Blush creates a softer, more subtle color and it’s quick to apply. 

* Eye Liner Pencil can be used to outline the eyes or absolutely any part of a face painting design. For beginners it’s much quicker and easier than using a brush. I highly recommend it, it’s a super easy way to create clean lines. And these days you can get eye liner in an endless amount of different colors, so you have alot to choose from.

* Eye Shadow can be used around the eyes and anywhere else on the skin. You can find cheap eye shadow in countless colors, just like blush it’s quick to apply and you may even want to experiment by blending eye shadow with your face paints. It’s up to you, I think you should never stop experimenting with different face painting ideas.

The way I take care of my facepainting brushes is after washing with soap and water I put a rubber band in the brush handle and let it hanging in some place in the kitchen or in the bathroom.  In that way the water inside the bristles are going to drain and the brushes maintain its form.”

Do you want to know the secrets and techniques for applying camoflage face paint? Read this article I found…it was written for adults who want to apply camo face paint but can you can adapt it for kids. It covers some pretty advanced techniques, so if you really want to further your face painting you should be experimenting with this!

You see it in movies all the time, actors who don’t have a clue, trying to put camo face paint on their faces, and ending up looking very silly indeed. I will try to explain how to put your camo face paint on properly and why it should be done like that.

Firstly you must understand why things are seen, they all begin with S or M, (except one) so remember that and it shouldn’t be that hard. They are:

* Shine
* Shape
* Shadow
* Sound
* Movement
* And Colour

By putting on camo face paint, you are trying to stop some of these things being noticed. To a human, one of the most recognisable things that you can possibly see is another human, or a human face. So it is very important that you make your face as unrecognisable as possible, this does not mean that you put one strip of paint under each eyes, nor does it mean that you paint your face so green that you look like a serious case of facial gangrene.

So, the first thing to do is to make sure you have the right type of camo face paint. To begin with it has to be waterproof, otherwise you’d have to re-apply it after every time it rained. [This is not necessary for face painting kids] Second, you have to make sure you have the right colours.

Black is no good at all (unless you are applying Urban cam), as it does not occur naturally in the wild. The two colours you will need for the majority of the time are brown and green.

Firstly you need to eliminate shine. The way you do this is with a thin layer of brown all over you face, neck (don’t forget the back) and ears. Get some of the brown and put it in your palm, in order to make a thinner layer you must then spit on the paint in your palm. After spitting on start to apply it to your face, not too thickly, it should be a nice even layer of light brown. Don’t forget to do your eyelids, and rub some into your eyebrows and the beginning of your hairline as well. When done properly this completely eliminates the natural shine produced by your face.

Now to get rid of the shape of your face. The most distinguishable features on your face are your mouth, your eyes and your nose. You want to break these shapes up, so do not put circles around your eyes, a line down your nose, and a line along your mouth, not only will you be more obvious you will also look like a sick panda. Draw lines with your fingers in the different greens and a few in brown. They need to cut down the eyes vertically or diagonally, across the nose horizontally or diagonally and down the mouth vertically or horizontally, this is so the shape of your face is broken up.

Do one or two lines on each of your ears, and a couple going down and across your neck. Do three or four on each cheek going downwards. Make all of the stripes small, you don’t want massive tiger stripes going right down your face, though it looks quite cool, it can make you quite obvious. (Hamsterman says you only use stripes in coniferous forests. In deciduous forests, a series of blobs is used to the same effect.- But I think stripes look cooler).

The only time you can do anything about shadow is by adjusting the amount or the darkness of cam on your face according to how much shadow is around.

Sound and Movement don’t really apply here, and colour is pretty obvious (lots of green and brown).

Follow those steps and you’ll start looking like a proper soldier who knows what they’re doing, not like a muppet.

Hi guys, my name is Pauline – Philadelphia’s sister in law and co author of the Comprehensive Guide to Face Painting and I’ll be making guest posts on the blog every now and then….depending on whether or not you like my posts ofcourse hehe…so leave a comment to show Philadelphia that you like me too! Coming up with original designs can be tricky, but coming up with face painting designs on the spot is even trickier.

It’s good to train yourself to look outside the box, to look at things in your current enviroment.

So here’s some food for thought. I’ll show you my thought process and process in coming up with an original design.

STEP 1: I had an old screen print hanging on the wall. In the corner was a very complicated,and intricate design. From this I could make a simpler design. (see picture one)

STEP 2: Looking at part of the print and looking at it sideways, I could see a part that would fit perfectly under the eye, with the similar curvature. Normally I would just sketch in my face painting scrap book. But here is a computerized version of what I’d do. (see picture 2)

STEP 3: It’s as simple as that… simplify and add your own elements to it. Your painting is always going to be different, from what you have designed on paper to what ends up on the face. This is not a bad thing. It just means that every time you paint this design, it will be unique and different on every face. (see picture 3)

Now this particular design probably wouldn’t be suitable for little kids, but its great for teenagers and adults who want and can appreciate something with a little more detail.

It’s always rewarding when you can sit back and look at the wonderful creation you have made…

We all have tricks up our sleeves for various things in the facepainting business and today I wanted to address the topic of how to keep children still, while facepainting.

It’s one thing to be a painter, but painting on a ‘moving canvas’ is definately another, wouldn’t you agree?

First of all the most important thing is to make sure the child has a comfortable seat to sit in. If they’re uncomfortable they’re more likely to fidget.  Make sure the chair is at the right height and close to you so they don’t have to stretch or strain to get be close enough to paint.

But what do you do to makesure the fidgety kids stay still while you’re facepainting? Todays post is an ‘open mic’ post, so that means I want you to share what facepainting techniques and tricks you use to keep children still…

Using glitter is an inexpensive way to give your face painting designs the wow factor! They’re so simple to use and the absolutely kids love them.

They’re are a few different types of glitter you can use on your face painting designs, so here’s a brief run down of each type of glitter and how to  apply them to your face painting designs.

Glitter Gel: This is great for adding to face painting designs or you can use it on it’s own. You can easily apply using a brush, small brushes tend to give better results and you can also just use your fingers. Put a little on the eyelids of a princess face painting design or in the wings of a butterfly designs for a magical effect!

Glitter (Iridescent) Powders: These are the finest glitter, a flour type powder. Mix a little powder with the face paint and apply it to the skin. Try this technique with fantasy face painting designs. It will add a ‘high sheen’ to the finished face painting design and a whole lotta pizazz!  It can also be applied on its own with a moist brush or sponge.

Glitter Dust: This is a loose glitter, great for the face and the body. To use it, sprinkle the glitter onto the paint whilst it is still wet and the paint is already on the face. Or, to have a little more control – use a slightly damp brush to add glitter to specific parts of your face painting design like on the nose of a bunny design, or around a batman design.

Now this will save you some time and hassle! When you’re facepainting, every little tip and trick you know can help enormously. So, here’s one about keeping your brushes and water clean, to save you from wasting time, having to change the water every 10 minutes.

And, I can’t take credit for this one. This is a tip from my sister-in-law Pauline (she co-wrote The Comprehensive Guide to Face Painting“.

Instead of using a jar, or cup to hold your water…use a plastic ice block/popsicle mould to hold your water. So, if you have an 8 popsicle mould (like in the picture) you have 8 separate sources of water and can use each one for a different color group!

You can use one for just white, one for your pinks and reds, one for yellows and oranges, one for browns, one for blacks, one for greens, one for blues and one for purples.

And if you assign certain brushes to certain color groups, you’ll save a heck of a lot of time because you won’t have to wash your brushes anywhere near as often! But the really cool thing is, it’s cheap, easy to find and it makes life easier!

Okay, here’s an idea for the beginners that can make face painting a little easier, and a little less daunting if you’re not completely confident with painting free hand. You can use face painting stencils to paint faces with ease.

This is a great face painting idea to begin with but keep practising your free hand paintings, people prefer the more unique designs, and so will you once you become a more confident face painter!

To Make Face Painting Stencils You Will Need the Following:
• A craft knife.
• A piece of acetate or stiff plastic.
• A printout of the stencil design (you can draw/sketch on a piece of paper this if you want)
• A cutting board (or a hard surface to cut the stencil out)
• Tape.

Step 1: Design your stencil design by either finding one online and printing it out of drawing one of your own. Try to stick to something simple as the surface area (a child’s face) is quite small and will most likely move while you paint them!

Step 2: Use some tape to stick down the printout (or your sketch) of the stencil design to the piece of acetate along the edges. Make sure that the stencil design is a sensible size for a child’s cheek.

Step 3: Using a sharp craft knife start carefully cut out the stencil.

Make sure to always wash stencil after use, never use an unwashed stencil on somebody, it may cause skin irritations or allergic reactions.

I explained who you should avoid, and now I’m going to tell you what you can do when you can’t be facepainting. Because you don’t have to turn them away, all you have to do is provide an alternative!

Here are some great ideas, you might like to try:

* Bodypainting:
If they have cuts or open sores on their face, why not paint
something on their hands, arms or even legs?

* Temporary Tattoos:
Always have temporary tattoos handy, there are a large variety of
tattoos out there to choose from for both girls and boys.

*Stickers:
Younger children love stickers so keep some handy, if they can’t get
their face painted, stickers should still put a smile on their face.

* Colored Hair Spray:
Colored hair spray looks awesome, it’s quick and easy to use so
have a couple of different colors handy just in case.

* Glitter Spray:
Glitter spray for hair is quite popular, you might want to combine this
with an idea from above.

You can also use these ideas as an upsell when you’re facepainting!

So, always have alternatives ready because you don’t just have to be a face painter.

Did you know that you can’t just face paint anybody? That there are some people you have to avoid when facepainting? If you didn’t, I’m so glad you’re reading this article. This could save you a lot of stress, time and money later on down the track.

So, why can’t you, you ask? Because of hygiene standards. Hygiene is extremely important in facepainting. There are certain rules to follow just like in any other industry.

You should never paint someone who has:

*Any open cuts or sores on their face.
*A cold sore or conjunctivitis or any other known infectious skin
condition.
*A food allergy or allergic reactions to soaps, skin creams, etc without
a prior skin test.

If you still continue facepainting on people who fall into, one of the above catergories then you’ll risk a number of things, such as your clients getting allergic reactions, to contaminating your face paints and infecting others, to getting sued for all of the above (in extreme cases).

Now, you might be thinking, “although it’s the safest thing to do, it’s a shame to have to turn away a customer”. But you don’t have to turn them away, there is a way to keep them happy and ensure you still get work and get paid.

I recently had a face painter ask me a great question about what to do when your paints get all runny and gooey in the heat. Face painters have this problem all over the world whenever summer comes around.

You definately don’t want your paints to be gooey, because once the consistency has changed, it’s much harder for you to create the designs that you’ve practiced no matter how many times you’ve practiced them!

Your designs will instantly look not as professional as they could, so I’m going to let you in on a little secret…

And it’s so simple, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it earlier!

The secret is… put your paints on ice!

Keep your face paint jars/palettes in an ice box to keep them from heating up and getting runny and gooey. Or just get a tray, fill it up with ice and put your face paints on top. Yep, it’s that simple!

Choose simple designs that only use 5 colors or less, or designs that only have 5 steps layers or less. If the designs you have or are practicing are more complicated, then simplify them. You may find that they even look better simplified! Just paint the most important parts, and don’t get carried away with details. Trust me, sometimes…less is more and remember that children are usually just happy enough to get their faces painted, they don’t care so much that you didn’t go into intricate detail.

2. Focus on 10 designs and practice, practice, practice!

If you’re just beginning, then focus on 10 designs, maybe 5 that girls will definitely like then 5 for the boys. And then….practice, practice, and more practice! Along the way, you’ll find your own time saving techniques that work for you personally and develop some serious skills! If you’re finding it hard to get hold of models to paint on (your family and friends have become sick of being painted) then why don’t you buy a plastic manikin to practice on? They’re easy to clean and they don’t fidget or complain either! You’ll get tonnes of practice out of them and become a speedy face painter in no time!

3. Color Preparation

Once you’ve picked a set of 10 designs to focus on, make note of which colors each design needs. Then make sure to have all those colors ready before you start face painting. This might mean, you’ll have to premix colors. This kind of preparation saves a lot of time, so you can be a faster face painter!

4. Stock Up on Brushes

Stock up on brushes and have one brush for each color. Could you imagine if you only used one brush and you were washing it every two seconds between different colors? It would take you forever! The more brushes you have the quicker you’ll be.

5. Don’t be a Perfectionist!

Now, sometimes I’m guilty of being a perfectionist not just in face painting but in everyday life. And the thing about being a perfectionist is you can pretty much never succeed (because nobody’s perfect) and even if you do, you’ll take forever trying!

As a face painter, you really can’t afford to be a perfectionist. A child does not want to sit there for hours while you perfect every last detail. And anyway, what you think is not perfect, or not the best you can do doesn’t matter because of one simple reason. It doesn’t matter to the child! Remember that you’re your own harshest critic. What you think is ‘not up to scratch’ will probably still put a smile on a kids face anyway.

So don’t your waste time, (and the childs and parents time) by perfecting things that they won’t even notice or care about.

This is not to say you should get lazy and sloppy now! Do your best, but don’t get carried away with the little things that only the eye of a critical face painter can see.
