Each color combination was designed to the exact specifications of world famous face & body artist and instructor: Jinny (as seen in the video). The large surface of the rectangular cake has equal amounts of each color and are made with the smooth and creamy Paradise AQ make up that blends seamlessly on the skin to a vibrant finish.

Application with Sponge:
Dampen sponge in water, ring out any excess water. Begin by placing the sponge at one end of the Prism cake and swipe the sponge across to the other side, back and forth without lifting the sponge. This helps keep the lines in place. When sponge is fully loaded, place on the area to be designed and “pat” colors onto the skin.

Application with Brush:
Wet the Custom Designed Square Paradise AQ brush (1 inch or 3/4 inch) and place it at one end of the Prisma cake and swipe the brush to the other side, back and forth without lifting the brush. This helps keep the colors in place. When the brush is fully loaded begin your design by placing the brush on the area to be designed and brush the colors on. Remove with soap and warm water.

Hi everyone, my name is Tamara, and I am a new blog writer for Face Painting Tips! Today I’d like to talk about painting on darker skin tones.

Being a person of color (mixed with Irish/Puerto Rican and Black) I have come across some challenges about what colors work best for clients with darker skin tones, so they can achieve that “Wow” factor.

People of color have a variety of beautiful hues and unfortunately not all face paint colors are complimentary to those skin tones. Therefore, colors that may look good on a light skinned person may not have the same effect for a person of a darker skin complexion.

Before I get into which colors to use and avoid, I just wanted to explain a couple things about the color wheel and complimentary colors which will make this easier to explain.

The Color Wheel…
A color wheel will show primary and secondary colors and sometimes tertiary colors. It is handy to keep one on you at a face painting gig!

Primary colors are red, blue, yellow and all other colors are derived from these colors. Secondary colors (orange, violet, green) are colors made by mixing two primary colors. Eg. When you mix yellow and red (primary colors) you get the color orange (secondary color). Tertiary colors are colors made by mixing two secondary colors.

Complimentary Colors…
Complimentary colors are colors that are “opposites”. For example: if you want to find the complimentary color to RED, find the color that is opposite RED on the color wheel and you will find that it is GREEN.
IE: RED is complimentary to GREEN
BLUE is complimentary to ORANGE
YELLOW is complimentary to VIOLET

Colors to Use & Colors to Avoid…
There is no such thing as black skin but skin of multiple hues of tans and browns. Over time I have noticed that some darker skin complexions have a red and yellow undertone. These are the colors that you should stay away from when painting these clients.

• If the model has dark skin – stay away from using the undertone color in the design. Eg. If the model has dark skin with yellow under tone – stay away from using yellow in the design.

• If you’re trying to avoid a particular color like yellow because the model has yellow undertones – use its complimentary color (explained above) instead which is violet.

• Also avoid colors that are too close to the models skin tone. You should be able to see (in the photo to the RIGHT) that the Paradise brown that I used for this client’ teddy bear was not a good choice as it looks like I didn’t even paint her skin.

• People of a darkened skin complexion are of the warm color family, so when face painting these clients you will want to stay away from these colors. eg Warm colors are: yellow, oranges, reds, lighter violets and cool colors are: greens, blues to darker violets.

• My greatest success has been using bright bold neon colors (again choose your colors wisely), or metallic colors.

Sponge Technique Tip…
Another technique I have found to be beneficial to my clients is not to drag your sponge as this lightens the color and there may be some areas that are missed. Instead I stipple my colors in the skin. This makes the colors appear more bold, complete and not as sparse.

I’ve had many requests about how to paint gold/silver metallic ‘live’ statues so I decided to write a blog post about it! This is quite simple to do and it looks amazing! We hand pick all the supplies that we sell and the best products to work with to achieve this shiny metallic look is without a doubt – Mehron Metallic Powders and Mixing Liquid.

The Face & Body…

Mix Mehron Metallic Powder with Mehron Mixing Liquid. Use about 2-3 times as much liquid to powder and make sure it is thoroughly blended before applying, eg. no lumps.

You must only mix a little at a time as the alcohol evaporates and will not keep for long if pre-mixed, so mix a little at a time as you work.

You will need 1 bottle of powder and 1 bottle of Mixing Liquid 4.5oz per slim female body, but its a good idea to have one in reserve in case of spills or accidents.

The mixture can be applied with a brush or a sponge, though a sponge will absorb lots of the product, which is quite wasteful, and not give such a smooth finish as a brush.

If you are covering large areas, such as a whole body, you will need a large brush.

We recommend Mark Reid’s Body Brush.

When you have finished painting, you can polish with a soft powder puff or cloth.

Because the finish using the mixing mediums is resistant to touch, it is also resistant to glitter adhering, so you would need to use an adhesive for glitter to stick.

The Hair…
The product can also be applied to hair, but we would not recommend that it is put

on bleached hair as there have been issues with a green tinge lingering afterwards.

Use the same mix as above.

The Fabric/Clothes…

The product can also be applied to fabrics and props so that everything matches.

Use the same mix as above!

TIP: When painting a model from head to toe, make sure to get them to bend their elbows/knees as you paint them so you can cover all the creases properly – if you don’t you will see the patches as soon as they bend!!

TIP 2: If you want an amazingly shiny, chrome-like finish -  mix the powders with an oil such as Baby Oil, Vegetable Oil, Olive Oil etc. It can be applied very easily using your hands, kind of like a massage. This will look incredible, but be aware – it will also be very oily! Anything that your model touchs will be affected and it will take lots and lots of shower gel/soap and hot water to remove it from the skin.

NOTE: If skin is sensitive it should not be applied near the eye/mouth/nose area because of the alcohol in the mixing liquid – alternatively the metallic powders can be used dry in those areas.

Hello Face Painting friends.

I had a lovely job a few weeks ago where I painted a family for a Masquerade Party. I had around 10 minutes per design including talking to them about what they were wearing so my design would complement thier clothes, so these were fairly fast designs…Please note that the family had to travel a way to their event so they left thier clothes and lipstick off until they were there, so they are slightly unfinished.

I have posted some pictures to inspire you with your own mask designs.

Lace Mask-a pretty design to complement a white dress with black sash.

Here are a few tips to help you create your own mask designs:

- Use the figure 8 on its side as guidence, this will give you a good indication of a flattering mask shape that suits all face shapes.

- Use techniques you are comfortable with. This will allow you to confidently create a design on the spot, showcasing your strengths.

- Practice working out designs on your practice head to get an idea of how the shapes will flow on the face.

Filigree Butterfly, a jewel inspired mask

- Have some fun and replicate the outfit worn by the person.

- Add liquid glitter, gems and even feathers for extra glamour.

- Google “masks” in google images online to get inspired by a huge array of mask designs.

- think outside the square – a snake wrapped around the eyes could become a suitable mask.

Face Paint Supplies You’ll Need:

White, Black, Bright Red (3 COLOR DALMATION PACK), Sponge and a Snazaroo Face Painting Brush.

STEP 1:

Using a damp sponge and White face paint, apply a nice even base coat of white to the whole face. Make sure the eyes are kept tightly shut.

STEP 2:

With Black face paint and your brush, draw on some patches: around one eye, on the chin, cheeks and forehead. Add an eyebrow over one eye. Also paint the nose and mouth, and add whiskers.

STEP 3:

Using Bright Red paint and the brush, paint on a small tongue hanging out of one corner of the mouth.

Once you have gathered a precious collection of brushes for your face (and body) painting it is important to take good care of them. properly looked after, your brushes will serve you well and will last a long time.

Here are some tips for brush care below, I look forward to your tips too.

Keep your white white! I use a seperate brush for painting with white, this saves me from trying to wash all of the black or colour out of the brush before using the white. I save time this way and I also keep my white bright instead of grey. I also keep a brush (in a couple of sizes) for black and another for colours.

Regularly wash your brushes with soap or brush cleaner to help them stay in good condition. You can rinse them in 99% alcohol to steralise them – they will need to air dry. Sometimes I use brush shaper on my clean brushes to help the bristles stay in good shape. I dip the brush in and arrange the bristles and leave to air dry. The bristles will remain stiff and hold thier shape, the stiffness disapears the next time you use the brush.

Storage. I like to keep my brushes in a “brush wallet” I can stand it up ready to use at a job, then fold it for storing the brushes when not in use.

At a recent workshop I took this picture of a participant’s great idea for her brushes while working; she has stretched netting over a container holding it in place with a band. its a great way to have your brushes ready to use at a job, keeping  them seperate.

Important: Please don’t leave brushes standing bristle down in water! They will bend and will never be the same again. Also if you have wooden handles these will become swollen causing the  paint to crack and chip off.

STEP 1:

Using a damp sponge, cover the bottom of the face from below the nose to the jaw line, with a yellow base. Then sponge the top of the face with orange paint.

STEP 2:

Apply the white detailing with a brush. Paint a wide/moustache’ underneath the nose and across the top of the lip.

Add two upside down triangles at either side of the bottom lip to create fangs.

Then draw white spiky eyebrows above each eye and 3 white strokes at the corner of each eye.

Add extra white strokes along the side of the cheek, just above the jaw line. Leave enough space between each line to add in more color at the final stage.

STEP 3:

Color the tip of the nose black and add black strokes to the white eyebrows and at the corner of the eyes.

Do the same between the white lines on the jaw line and them at the edge of the mouth and fangs.

Finally paint a line from the middle of the nose to the middle of the top lip and add black dots on the white moustache.

And finish with 3 whiskers on each side.

Kim Baker has made another video tutorial you guys are going to like. It’s a Dragon Body Painting design that can be done on the arm sort of like a tattoo as seen in the video or it can be modified and used on the face.

It’s quite detailed and a design that you would use when you don’t have a long line.

Okay, so you’ve been face painting this last weekend and now you’re in the laundry thinking…”How on earth am I going to get this face paint out of my clothing?”

So I thought I’d let you know what has worked for other face painters and I’d like you to share your own tricks and techniques for gettings paint stains out of your clothing.

• Wet the stained area of clothing
• Rub vegetable/glycerin soap into it
• Stretch the area tight and then
• Run under a fast-flowing hot water
• Once the stain it out you can throw it in the wash as you normally would.

You’ll have a better chance at getting the stains out the earlier you try to wash the stain out.

Hello Everybody,

I am  a big fan of one stroke face painting with split cakes, it makes face painting so fast and beautiful! It’s great to see you can now buy the Diamond FX Split Cakes on here. Today I have  put together two flower step by steps for you to try, using the (one stroke) Mini Split Cakes and a 3/4 Inch Flat Brush.

The first design, Frangipani, can be painted using the DFX Mini Sunset Split-Cake, just use the side with the white for this design (don’t pick up the violet). You can also use the DFX Mini Jungle Split-Cake for the leaves in both designs. You can use the DFX Mini Party Split-Cake for  the rose design (don’t pick up the violet).

Step 1: Load sponge with golden yellow and apply to inside of eye. Add pink to the other end of the sponge and add this color next to the golden yellow and blend.

Step 3: Add butterfly head, body and antennae using a #4 round brush and black. The body is a teardrop.

Step 4: Using the same brush and black, outline the wings, coming inwards at regular intervals. Add a curly-Q at the bottom.

Step 5: Add inner black lines- “M’s and W’s” and fill in between with black.

Step 7: As a variation, add long tear drops or swirls and curls on the wings in black.

Step 8: Don’t forget the lips! I used orange, outlined in red and drag blended the red into the orange with a dry flat brush.

TIP: If you would like to paint a more traditional Tiger design, use Golden Yellow instead of Sea Green, & Orange instead of Blue.

Step 1: Sponge white on for muzzle and eyes.

Step 2: Sponge on metallic yellow between and under eyes. Sponge Sea Green in middle of forehead, temples and cheek area.

Step 3: Sponge on Blue between the Sea Green areas. Blend colors.

Step 4: With a #4 Round brush, add a black nose, lips, muzzle and whisker lines.

Step 5: Add 2 eye lines in black, using a #4 round brush. Add tiger lines (4-5) in middle of forehead. Thin to thick to thin….and a wiggle pressure in the middle of the stroke.

Step 6: Add 4 more black lines using the same brush. One along the cheek bone, one on the temple area and 2 along the jaw line. Repeat on other side.

Step 7: Outline fangs in black and fill in with white. Best to use a #2 round brush for smaller details such as these, but a #4 is fine.

Step 8: Add white dots if you like to the black lines using a #2 round brush and white paint.

Lot’s of people think they can face paint and imagine it would be a fun way of raising cash for their local school, church or scout group.  However it isn’t really as easy as that and here are ten hints and tips that I hope will set you on the road to success.

1.      If possible take a basic training course with a well established face painter to learn the basics.  Or at the very least get hold of some good books and DVDs so you can tutor yourself.

2.      You MUST have full Public Liability Insurance.  Without it you are putting yourself and the public at risk.  The minimum level of cover suggested for the UK is £1 million.

3.      In the UK we have a system called CRB (Criminal Records Bureau).  It simply confirms that the individual has no past criminal convictions that would make them unsuitable to work with children.  There are no mandatory requirements to be CRB checked as long as you are not left alone with a child.  It’s important to find out if you have something similar in your country and make sure you abide by the rules.

4.      Health and safety.

a.       Don’t paint anyone that doesn’t want to be painted.  Some parents will bring a baby just a few months old and ask to get their face painted.  My advice is don’t paint anyone under 2 years old.  If you don’t want to offend, offer to paint a small design on an arm or a leg.

b.      Don’t paint anyone who looks as though they might have measles, chicken pox, cold sore, conjunctivitis, skin conditions etc., or even head lice. But be careful what you say as some might have something that they are embarrassed about – and don’t paint anyone with open wounds.

c.       Glitter, lots of kids, particularly little girls, like you to use glitter – make sure it is designed for face painting.  I tend to use the gel glitters.  I have heard of children who have been frightened when a glue has been painted on them and then a puffer bottle used to spray the glitter – they don’t like the sudden rush of air.  NEVER use metallic craft glitter.

d.      Although not really and health and safety issue, some bouncy castle hirers will not allow children with painted faces on their equipment.

5.      Charges. You can expect to paint around 10 to 12 children per hour.  If you want to increase the numbers you paint think about painting simple cheek or arm designs instead of a full face.  Work out what you think is a fair rate accordingly.

6.      Publicity.  Make sure that you have posters giving a clear indication of prices and terms and conditions (such as a. and b. above).  You might like to invest in some business cards, or just some printed slips produced by computer so you can pass on your details for future bookings.  What ever method you use make sure that you check the spelling thoroughly.  You might also like to advertise your services in local community magazines, or even your local paper.  Some people like to include a photo of a face they have painted.  Unless it is your own child make sure that you have the parent or guardian’s written permission.

7.      Paints

a.       There are many different face paints on the market, find one that suits you, both for price and ease of use.  Water based is best, they are quick drying and wash off with soap and water.  If they get on clothes they’ll come out easily with usual washing.  They are also non toxic.

b.      The basic colours you will need are white, black, yellow, orange, red, green and blue.  If it’s been a long time since you did any art you might find a colour wheel useful so you can learn how to mix different colours and shades.  NEVER use anything but face paint on anyone.

8.      Brushes and sponges. Buy the best you can afford.  Personally I prefer to use brushes as they give you much more control and aren’t as messy.  You will need several different thicknesses and possibly a fan brush to give feathered finishes. Don’t be tempted to buy cheap brushes and sponges as they just won’t give a good finish – and the hair comes out all over the face paint!  You will also need a brush holder or pot to stand your brushes in when working.

9.      Paints and brushes etc needs some sort of storage – you can often pick up cosmetic boxes etc at garage sales – make sure they are clean.  Or look out for a cheap plastic tool box.

10.  Other equipment

a.       Baby wipes – if a child has been eating or playing then make sure they have a clean face.

b.      Containers.  Have three containers, one for fresh water (tap is fine but make sure you use fresh water every time you go out and remember that you may not always have access to a tap), one for dirty water and one for waste such as used tissues and baby wipes.  You will also need a jar for the water you are using to paint with – and change the water frequently – nothing looks worse than a face painter with a jar of dirty water!

c.       ALWAYS carry a mirror so children can see your finished work.  If you want to be particularly safe you can buy unbreakable aluminium mirrors.

d.      Chairs and table – I tend to use two chairs, one for me and one for the child and a reasonably sized table – it’s good to spread out your bits and bobs.  You should also cover your table with a plastic tablecloth or perhaps a towel.

e.       You may want to wear a CLEAN apron – it looks professional and keeps your clothes clean.  If it has a front pocket it might also give you somewhere to keep the money.

f.       Umbrella or gazebo to protect you, and the paints, from rain or sun.

g.      You may wish to invest in some washable tattoo paints and stencils for those who don’t want their faces painted but still join in the fun.

Finally, good luck. I hope that you raise lots of money for charity.  If you get a good name for face painting you might even be asked to attend birthday parties, as I have, to raise even more money.

What paints do you use? Brushes? Glitter? Sponges? Equally as crucial, I always ask “WHY” – are they so important, the best, etc???

Whether you are face painting for fun or for profit, I cannot stress enough – the importance of using ONLY quality paints and products.

When looking for products always ask yourself the following questions –

• Is the product recommended by a face painting authority? E.g. a shop assistant might not be able to give you the same information as a professional face painter.

• Has someone you know and trusted used the product effectively? E.g. was it easy to use? Easy to remove? Were there no adverse reactions?

• Are the glitters safe for skin? E.g. craft glitters, and glitter glues are not suitable for the skin. Use only approved cosmetic glitters and liquid blings.

• Are the sponges, brushes or applicators disposable or washable? E.g. minimize germs spreading! Eww! Cross contamination should be avoided at all times.

• Is the paint able to be stored away for next time? E.g. school fetes and charity events often waste much needed resources when face painting products and supplies are bought, only to have a large amount thrown away afterwards – because it can’t stay viable.

• What are the pros and cons when choosing product? E.g. – it is often worth buying the more expensive professional products for the following reasons –

1. They are much EASIER and application is almost always FASTER and the result BETTER

2. They store away wonderfully until next time.

3. You hold more credibility as a face painter and body artist, and your liability risks are kept at an absolute minimum.

4. Manufacturers and distributors of quality face paints and associated products are more accountable and aware of the importance of maintaining the highest possible standards required.

What do I personally use and recommend? Ultimately, it is always a very personal decision. Nevertheless, being a high profile and corporate face painting company – and from a liability perspective I ONLY use approved and recommended professional face and body painting products and supplies. I am a huge fan of Diamond FX, Paradise by Mehron & Tag .

This design has stars, but you could easily add hearts, flowers, spiders, dolphins or anything else to the boarder, and have the back ground and name in a different colour – there are many possibilities with this theme.

Step 1: Swipe a rainbow across the area, pat gently to blend the colours and make it nice and bright.

Step 2: Write a name, in caplitals or lower-case letters, fancy or plain!

Step 3: Add some stars and outline in Black

Step 4: Decorate around the edge with swirls and teardrops.

Step 5: Add some white dots to the design, use some black to add lowlights to the swirls and tear drops – this helps them stand out. glitter the design!

Viola – a  fast and impressive arm design.

Hi again…..I am going to expand on a topic that Philadelphia has addressed in asking me for helpful tips for painting “vintage skin”.

My sweet Mother lives with me and is an ever-present canvas when I need her to be.  I often will work out designs using her face or sometimes even her back if the design happens to be a technique that I need to firm up.

She likes that because it always gets her a back wash and that always makes me laugh.  I am attaching a step by step design from the Wolfe Brothers that I recently needed my painters to use at the Dallas movie premier of the Karate Kid.

I needed a quick dragon face to share with them so asked Mom to model for me to demonstrate.

Painting older skin is often difficult, uneven and very lined.

I find it much easier to work with the texture and lines than to go against the grain.  Many times a sweet Grandmother will sit in my chair at a B-Day party wanting to be a part of the festivities and I will always advocate that “ less is more” in these cases, keep the design small and try to stay away from the eyes.

Sometimes you just have to make the best of things and remember they want to feel pretty too!

I love when face painters are able to combine face painting with story telling. It brings so much more depth to the face painting design and makes the expereince for the model/audience so much richer!

Christopher Agostino is a master at this. In this video he tells the Japanese tale of “The Demon on the Bridge” while painting the “Demons” face on the model. It is sooo spooky! I was hooked the whole time! It’s probably too scary for the younger kids, but teens can really get into it…but thats my opinion…watch the video and let me know what you think!

I would love to share with you what I have found to be one of the most important business tips: Making a fantastic first impression! A very good mentor of mine once said to me some very profound words that ring true. Thankfully I have applied this principle directly into my business life and continue to do so on a daily basis. It is so ridiculously simple, and yet it still eludes many people. This is what he told me – “You only ever get ONE chance to make a 1st impression. Trying to catch up afterwards is futile.”

Milana’s 1st Tip – Make a Great & Lasting 1st Impression!

When you arrive at your job, greet the client/contact person by name with a smile. Even if it is a gig you may have done many times before, the client is still the person who pays you, and you should always aim to make sure they know you have arrived.

Be punctual. Allow for parking, traffic, set up, etc. It is always better to be earlier rather than later. You may think that the client hasn’t noticed you slipped into a large event 10 minutes late, but believe me, they do.

Presentation – invest in 1 good quality costume or outfit that speaks “professional” all over it. Including shoes! Keep your costume maintained and clean. I always supply uniformed costumes for 2 or more of my performers/artists at the same event. If you can’t do this, then try and colour coordinate multiple performers using matching coloured t-shirts and caps. It looks great!

Set up your table to match the theme or event. A brightly coloured coordinated table cover to the ground looks professional and neat. It is also a great way to store any of your extra gear away nice and tidy.

Paints, cloths, sponges, brushes, etc should always be clean and presented neatly and professionally on your table in your set up. (I know this is rarely the case at the end of a booking J) Once again, you should be aiming to make a great 1st impression.

Value your craft. When people see that you take pride in what you do, it sets you apart from other Face Painters. I speak to everyone with utmost courtesy and respect. I am a huge “smiler”, and people notice! However, I do not allow people to belittle or speak rudely to me on my jobs. I expect people to treat me with the same courtesy I show them. I never paint an unwilling child. I explain courteously, that as a professional face painter I want children to love the experience, not be frightened by it. I offer a hand or arm painting to gently ease them into it.

No smoking – this may seem like a basic one, but if you are a smoker – remember that while you may think you have covered all of the “smoking smells”; non-smokers can really smell it. Try and limit the smoking to before and after the event, not during. Even if you are taking a designated break, it can make the difference to a client re-hiring you again. I have personally spoken to clients who have asked to only send non smoking performers/artists to an event.

Cover tattoos. Once again, this may be basic, but uncovered tattoos can detract to the professional impression you are trying to achieve. Paint over them, or cover with an armband. (A nice sparkly headband is great for covering armband tattoos.) Remember, while there is nothing wrong with tattoos, your corporate client might not like it, and in the end you want to keep him/her happy.

Before and after any job is equally as important as the actual event. Higher profile clients like to deal with professional people. Keep your paperwork up to date. Send out booking confirmations straight away upon your bookings being made. Contact clients 1 or 2 days before the event to confirm. If you say you will phone a client back, make sure you do. Be CLEAR with your choice of payment options. Expect prompt payment. Remember you will get what you expect. Make a follow up call to thank the client for the business and ask for any feedback. This is especially good to ensure quality control if you have performers working for you in several locations. Be courteous and professional in all business correspondence – email, personally, or via phone.

Hello Face Painting Friends,

This month I would like to talk about my experiences with managing lines while Face Painting. Most of the events I paint at I am paid to paint the children  for free, so I often end up with a huge line! Sometimes it works out perfectly and my line ends at the same time I am finishing, other times I need to end the line so I can finish on time.

When I first started Painting Faces I would often finish half an hour to an hour over the due time as I couldn’t bear to turn away any children.  Now I always finish within 5 minutes of my set finishing time!

To end my line I keep an eye on how long it is, particualarly as it gets closer to my set finish time. I have an idea of how many I will be able to paint in a set time frame, and base ending my line on this. I have had to end my line 2 hours before my finish time before, as it was so long!! Usually I end it at 10-30 minutes before my finish time.

To do this I go straight to the end of the line and ask who is at the end of the line. I tell them that they will be last to be painted today and would they mind holding a sign for me. I have a sign that says: I am last in line for Face Painting today, Please do not join the line. I then quickly mark each person in the line with a line of paint on their hand, to keep track of people who were in the line. This system works fairly well, I still keep an eye on things and occasionally have to tell people that I really won’t be face painting any more faces today. The people with the sign are usually helpful in explaining to those waniting to join the line, and the paint mark on the hand stops people from sneaking in! I always paint an extra special design on the last person for being my sign holder.

Sometimes I have my painting times on display, this also helps people to see that I will be finishing at a particular time.

Other tips to help manage your line:

- Have an “I’m Next” sign for the front person to hold. Good if there are multiple painters and you want to keep it to one line so it moves faster.

-Draw a line for those waiting to stand behind. I keep chalk in my kit to do this

-For Birthday Parties I number each child so they can go off to play and know that they will still have their turn.

-Have a line manager particularly for busy events, including pay per face, a line manager can help the child choose their design before they get into the chair, and keep the line organised and entertained with bubbles or similar.

-Streamline your designs, stick to the designs you are fast at for busy events to keep the line moving. I use lists of ideas for the children to choose from and I can paint a fast or detailed version of the design depending on how busy my line is.

Earlier this year at FABAIC in Orlando I had the pleasure of meeting one of my favorite artists Christopher Agostino. Also met up with him again at a face painting jam when I was in New York in June. I’m a big fan of his work and when I found this video he made on youtube recently I really wanted to share it with you all.

One of the cool unique things Christopher does when he goes out to paint is he doesn’t have a display board with designs photos…he asks each ‘model’ if they’d like to be “nice” or “spooky”. Then he suprises them! So every design in unique. Watch this video to see some of his designs, you’ll love them, they are sooo inspiring

“Creativity in Face Painting“

Hi, I don’t know if anyone else finds they need a photo to look at for painting ideas but it makes me wonder about my creativity as I don’t seem to be able to create my own. Yet, I keep reminding myself that I do a great job emulating reality by using this pictures to create as realistic “monsters” as possible. Isn’t copying a form of flattery? Also, I think it shows my skills in being able to replicate something seen onto a face.

Secondly, I was preparing for the Adelaide Zombie WAlk but I needed some ideas and I found this awesome realistic website for zombies. I don’t like it being all blood but rather what about the makeup underneath as well as the acting too. Therefore, I recommend checking out this website cos it’s a awesome zombie makeup by Matt Cail.

This ties to my first ideas with my attempts to emulate (see photos below). Speaking of which, I’m quite proud of my own creation for the bite on the hand (eg how the zombie infection was passed on-just remember to take off bracelets or long sleeves as they rub it off).

“Tiger Face Painting Designs”

Tigers are my ultimate favorite face design.  They were the easiest to learn and because I can vary the color scheme–I can please lots of eager faces with just one design

These are my niece and nephew-Sophie and Jake.  Sophie wanted to be a rainbow tiger.  Sure enough–little brother wanted to be one too–to Sophie’s dismay!!  She didn’t want her little brother to be “the same”.

Thankfully, the ability to change colors in the design was just the ticket–two “different’ tigers, two happy kids-one happy Dad!

“Fairy Garden Tea Party!”

My son and my daughter always shared their birthday parties every year since they are both born in August.

This year my daughter, Autumn, wanted her own girly party, so we decided to have a Fairy Garden Tea party.

I always love throwing my kids their birthday parties and making it extra special.

I did a lot of research and found a great “How to” video on You Tube using your Arty Brush cakes.  She made it look so easy .

So I bought it to use at my daughter’s party to give that extra effect for Fairy eyes.  I only practiced doing the makeup 4 times before the party because it was just so easy to do.

When the party was here, I set up a pretty station for the girls to come one by one and started to paint their faces.

I was very nervous, since this was my first time doing this.  I got more confident as the girls were walking away with big smile on their faces.

Also the parents were amazed this was my first time.  The end result was just perfect.  The face paint made their outfits look absolutely perfect.

Thank you so much for making this product so easy to do and making my daughter’s party a fairy-tale dream come true!!!

Hi everyone!

I recently got a call to do a school festival a few weeks ago, to paint about 300+ kids!

I just about fell out of my chair when I heard how many.

I have never painted that many people at one time!

But I never back down from a challenge and I quickly taught my 14 year old sister to paint a few simple faces.

We chose to limit our choices to: Tiger, Zombie, Rainbow Butterfly, Party Eyes, Snakes & Flowers.

When we arrived at the event, we had our own pavillion and we lined up the picnic tables along the sides of the building and which created a large walk way.

As we started to paint, my sister took the right side and I took the left.  We lined up as many as 25 kids at a time and went down the line with one color and then came back for details and once again for glitter.

We painted everyone, in three and a half hours–we were hired for 4 hours!  The parents were very impressed by our meathod of getting everyone painted so quickly.  They have already booked me again for next year!

I hope this helps anyone who needs to know how to paint a large group very quickly!

“Bear Face Painting Design”

Hi Philly.

Here’s the step by step for a bear design.

(1) Start by sponging a white, biege or yellow muzzle around the model’s nose, mouth and chin. You should avoid the nose, lips and the groove between. Also add a round lump near the lips as shown.

(2) Next, sponge the upper part of the model’s face brown (or a butterscotch colour) avoiding the jawline and area next to the chin and a small area around the eye areas. Painting over the corner’s either side of the bridge of the nose makes the brow seem lower and this illusion will be made clearer in the next step.

(3) Using a darker shade of brown, sponge a broad area over the jawline either sides of the face, the temple’s and the eye areas you’ve left uncovered. Paint the lower eyelids and the ‘lower socket’* with the same colour. Blend the light and darker brown to make a softer appearance.*lack of better words for it.

(4) Using black, paint in the model’s nose, lips and groove. Then the whisker dots, the small lines on bridge the model’s nose (just above the muzzle), the lines under the eyes and the eyebrows.

(5) The finishing touches:-
-Paint feathered darker brown lines around the edges of the face and under the eyes as shown.
-Paint the white whisker lines and the large dot on the nose.

Final Note: I was thinking of blending both an orange patch on the upper cheeks + cheek bones and an orange column on the fore head to add a ‘luster’ to the design. I thought of this after I put the designs together. GAH! Hate it when that happens.

“Step By Step Foxy Mask Face Paint Design” By Harmony Roth Shabtai

1. start with an orange triangle above each brow and continue the outer end towards the ear from there you draw a diagonal line to the mouth. you go over the mouth in order to “close” the mask.

2. paint the nose and half of the cheeks in white.

3. fill the lower part of the mask with orange and draw a thick line on each side of the nose. continue that line under the eyebrow.

4. outine in black the mask and each eye. you can add glitter or golden lines as highlights.

5.you can add white for some more

highlights and depth to the mask.
