Melbourne Body Art Competition (MBAC) 2011

The third year of MBAC proved to be bigger and better than ever! With more categories, including brush & sponge, Amateur, special FX, extreme hair and makeup & face painting. There were around 40 + competitors all painting thier hearts out!

A theme of “wired for sound” was given to all categories, and we set out to interpret this in our own way. Points are given for originality and interpretation of theme, in addition to composition, use of colour & technique. Body painters are given 6 hours to paint their piece and facepainters 2 hours. Let me tell you, that time flies by! The overall standard of work was very high, I was very pleased to place 2nd.

Mem Bourke travelled from New Zealand to present the big prize: A trip to New Zealand to compete in the New Zealand Body art awards in October 2011. this is a huge event, check out the website here , Artists and Models also travelled far and wide to participate.

The event is well supported by the community, check out the full sponsors list here to see all the wonderful businesses that have supported this event. Wow I could go on and on, there are so many involved and its hard to mention only a few, Thankyou to Ria, who’s vision, hard work and determination has created a wonderful event for us in Melbourne, I am really looking forward to next year, perhaps I’ll see some of you there? here are some pics for you: Click on image to see larger view.

The Australian Body Art Awards (ABAA) was a great success last month – it is always wonderful to be surrounded by Face and Body artists. I enjoyed teaching, competing and learning. I was also delighted to win First place in the Special FX Body Painting competition. The prize for that event was sponsored by bodyfx.co.nz inspiring me to create a turorial video using their special FX. I have also used the skin pallette, available from here, in this video.

Fuddruckers in Mira Mesa has graciously agreed to allow the area face painters, clowns, balloon twisters and henna artisits to hold a monthly jam every 2nd Tuesday of the month.

We will be practicing new designs, twisting balloons and working on anything you have wanted to try but not sure how to go about it.

The first jam is Tuesday, March 9th, from 3:00pm to 9:00pm. There will be a band there so we can rock out while we paint… ;o) Since we are getting the room free of charge, jam attendees are asked to purchase meals.

There’s also the possibility of having beginner and intermediate classes prior to the jams if enough painters show an interest. There will be a couple of demos and some door prizes for those of you that RSVP, (just reply to this email off-line).

Hey there, a few awesome Face Painting Workshops are taking place in Australia in the next month or so, I thought I’d share the details with you here:

Friday 29th October 2010
10am until 3pm
Leichhardt Marketplace Community Room
Sydney, NSW

You will learn about painting in public, hygiene procedures, products, working with children, as well as working for Moz Entertainment.
Cost – $76. Please note, the cost is only for the cost of hiring the room, plus covering wholesale professional equipment you will receive on the day.
The instructors’ time is not covered. (ie – this is not a moneymaking event!)

Please bring –
-   Any face painting equipment you already have
-   any photos of previous work
-   A blank folio pad for painting
-   Notepad for notes
-   your resume and/or CV

Some photos from IMATS in Sydney 2010! I had a wonderful time at IMATS. It’s a great place to draw inspiration from seeing as it is not totally inside the face painting/ body painting world. And its a great place to network too!

I was there helping my good friend Michelle from Moz Theatre (the Distributor of Diamond FX in Australia) and had fun playing with the paints and talking with face painters and make up artists to find out what they’re up to and what they want to see more of! Also caught up with some friends Yolanda (Body FX), Natalie, Amy and Kelly (Mehron) – you’ll see some of their work below.

Sydney Workshop with Yolanda Next Week!

A good friend of mine and amazing world renowned face and body artist Yolanda Bartram is coming to Sydney and putting on 2 workshops next week!

Yolanda won the World Champion Special FX Body Painting title for 2010 in Austria, she also came second at the North American Body Paint Championships 2010 in Las Vegas and won 1st place for Special Effects Make Up at the World Face and Body painting Championships in Austria 2009.

And next week she’ll be in Sydney teaching her face & body painting techniques and revealing her award winning make up secrets in 2 exclusive workshops: (only 8 spots in each workshop!)

3D Face-Art & Make-Up (8 people max)
Wednesday 15th September from 10- 4pm

Yolanda will give you techniques through painting shadows and highlights as well as working with prosthetics. From creating a beautiful fantasy/fashion design to an impressive creature face. Create a transformation from one concept to another. A fun and inspiring workshop with a lot of techniques and a new 3D idea about make up!

Bring a model after 12.30 or work on each other.

Body Painting with Special FX: (8 people max)
Thursday 16th September 10- 4pm

Create a winning design through line, composition and color use work with ‘new’ materials as well as paint, create texture likes: rust, cracking paints, furry textures and work with prosthetics in body-painting. Combine these new techniques with a strong design and concept.

I have had a very busy month this July teaching Face and Body Art workshops in Melbourne, Gold Coast and Darwin, Australia.

Teaching is wonderful, I get to meet new people, visit places I haven’t been before and my students always teach me new things too! I find that when I teach my students how to paint something they mix the techniques they have learnt with thier own creativity and individual style to give it thier own “flavour”

Teaching also inspires me to continue to improve and upgrade my skills to keep the workshops fresh and relevant to our ever evolving industry. I also love to teach the techniques that really work for me in busy job environments – line busters! designs that I can whip out to keep the long line moving along, as this is what the majority of my face painting work involves.

I would love to hear your tips for keeping the line moving during busy events…….I like to have a list of ideas for the child to choose from, rather than a picture board, this enables me to paint the quick or details version of the design depending on how busy I am.

The list suggest simple themes, such as fairy princess: rainbow, flower, ocean, ect they choose the design and variation and I get to create something just for them, within the time frame I have.

Queensland Workshop

I have some workshop images to give you a taste of the beautiful work my students created, to the left is a pile of heads from the face painting day in the Gold Coast, we were practicing scary boy designs! with Lovly Erinn a real model among the practice heads….

The final workshop for Gold Coast was the Body Painting day, I was so impressed by the beautiful work. The theme reflected the previous day’s jewellery and lace workshop.

I have included 4 images, although there were so many lovely designs it was hard to pick just 4.

Karin’s design is her first ever body paint, also there is a beautiful image of talented Milana’s work .

My final Destination was Tropical Darwin, for some warm workshops.

I was teaching community organisations, and had the pleasure of introducing many new people to the wonderful world of Face Painting.

My final image is a montage of some of the many demonstration designs I painted at each of the classes in Melbourne, Gold Coast and Darwin.

Australian Body Art Carnivale 2010

I had the absolute pleasure of experiencing and competing in the Australian Body Art Carnivale recently. This amazing event was held on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia from May 14th-16th, and it showcased some of Australia’s finest artists and photographers.

Included in the competitions were Face Painting, Body Brush & Sponge, Airbrush & Special Effects.

Managing Your Line at Face Painting Events

Hello Face Painting Friends,

This month I would like to talk about my experiences with managing lines while Face Painting. Most of the events I paint at I am paid to paint the children for free, so I often end up with a huge line! Sometimes it works out perfectly and my line ends at the same time I am finishing, other times I need to end the line so I can finish on time.

When I first started Painting Faces I would often finish half an hour to an hour over the due time as I couldn’t bear to turn away any children. Now I always finish within 5 minutes of my set finishing time!

To end my line I keep an eye on how long it is, particualarly as it gets closer to my set finish time. I have an idea of how many I will be able to paint in a set time frame, and base ending my line on this. I have had to end my line 2 hours before my finish time before, as it was so long!! Usually I end it at 10-30 minutes before my finish time.

To do this I go straight to the end of the line and ask who is at the end of the line. I tell them that they will be last to be painted today and would they mind holding a sign for me. I have a sign that says: I am last in line for Face Painting today, Please do not join the line. I then quickly mark each person in the line with a line of paint on their hand, to keep track of people who were in the line. This system works fairly well, I still keep an eye on things and occasionally have to tell people that I really won’t be face painting any more faces today. The people with the sign are usually helpful in explaining to those waniting to join the line, and the paint mark on the hand stops people from sneaking in! I always paint an extra special design on the last person for being my sign holder.

Sometimes I have my painting times on display, this also helps people to see that I will be finishing at a particular time.

Other tips to help manage your line:

- Have an “I’m Next” sign for the front person to hold. Good if there are multiple painters and you want to keep it to one line so it moves faster.

-Draw a line for those waiting to stand behind. I keep chalk in my kit to do this

-For Birthday Parties I number each child so they can go off to play and know that they will still have their turn.

-Have a line manager particularly for busy events, including pay per face, a line manager can help the child choose their design before they get into the chair, and keep the line organised and entertained with bubbles or similar.

-Streamline your designs, stick to the designs you are fast at for busy events to keep the line moving. I use lists of ideas for the children to choose from and I can paint a fast or detailed version of the design depending on how busy my line is.

Charity Work

Many of us have causes and charities that are dear to our hearts for various reasons. It can be difficult to choose where to give your time (and supplies) when there is an endless list of worthy organizations.

So what is a charitable, but gotta pay the bills, face painter to do? Well, let me share a story…….

This past May, I donated my time to the 2nd Annual Southwest Michigan Arthritis Walk. In exchange for my time and supplies I was given much free publicity.

The chairperson listed my business as a sponsor of the event in all printed material; letters, t-shirts, posters, etc. I was also given the opportunity to do a radio interview as one of the sponsors.

Now I have to tell you, I never would have been able to afford all this advertising; not in my second year of being in business!

But there is generally a budget for advertising, especially for a well-known organization, so you aren’t taking away from the charity.

I painted for 2 1/2 hours and it was worth every brushstroke. I took donations, which went to the Arthritis Foundation.

It was wonderful to help raise well over $10,000 for this charity. Plus, I have booked many events over the summer months as a result of being there and having so much free publicity.

Truly a win-win situation.

If you have been approached by a charitable organization don’t be afraid to negotiate a

deal for your time.

Truth be told, I would face paint for a poke in the eye and a candy bar, but the fact is my time is worth more than that and supplies, insurance, gas, etc. require me to be more practical.

I will be returning next year and look forward to helping make the 3rd Annual Southwest Michigan Arthritis Walk a bigger success than this year!

My son and my daughter always shared their birthday parties every year since they are both born in August.

This year my daughter, Autumn, wanted her own girly party, so we decided to have a Fairy Garden Tea party.

I always love throwing my kids their birthday parties and making it extra special.

I did a lot of research and found a great “How to” video on You Tube using your Arty Brush cakes. She made it look so easy .

So I bought it to use at my daughter’s party to give that extra effect for Fairy eyes. I only practiced doing the makeup 4 times before the party because it was just so easy to do.

When the party was here, I set up a pretty station for the girls to come one by one and started to paint their faces.

I was very nervous, since this was my first time doing this. I got more confident as the girls were walking away with big smile on their faces.

Also the parents were amazed this was my first time. The end result was just perfect. The face paint made their outfits look absolutely perfect.

Thank you so much for making this product so easy to do and making my daughter’s party a fairy-tale dream come true!!!

Face Painting Over 300 Kids In Under 4 Hours!

Hi everyone!

I recently got a call to do a school festival a few weeks ago, to paint about 300+ kids!

I just about fell out of my chair when I heard how many.

I have never painted that many people at one time!

But I never back down from a challenge and I quickly taught my 14 year old sister to paint a few simple faces.

We chose to limit our choices to: Tiger, Zombie, Rainbow Butterfly, Party Eyes, Snakes & Flowers.

When we arrived at the event, we had our own pavillion and we lined up the picnic tables along the sides of the building and which created a large walk way.

As we started to paint, my sister took the right side and I took the left. We lined up as many as 25 kids at a time and went down the line with one color and then came back for details and once again for glitter.

We painted everyone, in three and a half hours–we were hired for 4 hours! The parents were very impressed by our meathod of getting everyone painted so quickly. They have already booked me again for next year!

I hope this helps anyone who needs to know how to paint a large group very quickly!

Module one will include techniques and concepts:
airbrush quality sponge blending, line work review if requested, color theory, quick tricks for making objects (like bows and gems) look 3D, double loading round and flat brushes, one stroke tricks, and ideas for shaving time off your designs.

MODULE TWO: 2pm – 5pm, continue with these techniques and concepts, and show how to apply them to orginal, dynamic designs that “pack small, play big”.

My class will consist of sponge and brushstroke techniques enabling you to achieve quick and easy designs that will WOW!! your customers and make the children beam from ear to ear!! The class will be aimed specifically at beginners and intermediate level Face Painters. It will be a full day class of around 3 hours in each session.

The morning session will be focusing on Sponging techniques. You will learn how to use your sponge to your advantage, choosing colours that go well together to suit the tone of the child’s skin, blending techniques and double and triple loading sponges.

We will then have a break. Depending on the venue I’m hoping to include some lunch within the price, this will not only satisfy our tummies but it’ll be a great opportunity to all sit down together, have a chat and share experiences!

The afternoon session will be Brushstrokes.
You will learn how to test your brush for consistency of the paint, learn how to make sure you don’t get those “muddy streaks” when using black and white together (as an example) and learn how to achieve swirls, curls, and perfect crisp clean lines.
When you are finished with the class, your skill will be much improved enabling you to get those bookings that you’ve always wanted!!

The class will be priced at $90 per person with a $50 deposit required from each person who wishes to attend made payable to myself via paypal.

If you are approved to take this one day, the fee is $150
(prerequisite: only advanced students of Olivier Zegers)

A complete synthesis of Day 1 and 2 of the workshop. It will help students to understand and experience their own particular physical relationship to: the model’s face position WITH the brush or sponge’s position. This exclusive method helps to maintain better control of sponge and brush movements, for high quality work and maximum comfort.

Theory, demonstrations and small exercises are given in the morning, while practice sessions with specific exercises and group critiques are made during the whole afternoon.

IMPORTANT : The completion of three days of Level 1, gives you access to an exclusive internet Level 1 Study Group, where students can post photos of their work, and practice at their own pace/rhythm. Special exercises, critique and/analysis are offered to help you integrate theories/exercises learned from the Level 1 Workshop. Completion of 3 days also allows you to attend an evening jam led by Olivier after his U.S. Tour – stopping in NYC on his way back to Belgium

The space is not huge ( bring a smalll kit?) , but adequate, with room enough to set up on their tables and create. The clientele are generally up for being experimented on. We used to paint there regularly last summer so they are pretty amenable. You can bring henna/ jagua/glitter/mica tatts to practice too, they really love that. We were allowed to accept tips last time and we basically had whoever painted the tipper to keep their tips.

Artist Star Shields from California will be in D.C. teaching two 8-hour classes. The first class is airbrush basics, including mechanics, trouble-shooting, control, blend exercises, temporary tattoos, etc. The second class is more advanced face makeup with color blending, product practice on foam heads and live models. Stencil techniques, template techniques, brush strokes and tricks, stencil making and more will also be covered.

Star is extremely thorough and detailed and offers significant discounts on supplies and products. This is a total of 20 hours of intensive training.

There’s so much that could be covered that I would like to find out what the group wants before I make definite plans on what we will be doing. There will be a small materials fee for the FX materials tba once I know what we’ll be doing for sure.

My general plan would be to cover both vamp & gory, going over the most requested faces. I’d like to touch on prostetics and give you an opportunity to play with modeling things like noses, etc. I also wanted to cover how you can make an FX look without investing in special materials.

Just a note: I’m into scary and creepy, but I’m not into violence. There’s enough of that in world that I don’t want to contribute to it. So there will be no designs that intimate that a person has done harm to another like bullet wounds and knives sticking in people. But if someone is stupid enough to walk into a plate glass door (like I did at the body art ball!) then I could see doing a little blood. For those who will be having big lines, I’ve got a great quick cut.

My Fun in Austria – SF Competition

“My Fun in Austria” – SF Competition

Face painting is always on my mind, so this year when I went to compete in Austria, I took 2 face painting workshops, and they were very nice.

It seems that the most important colors are black (for shading) and white (for highlight)- that’s what can make or brake your design.

At the Wolfe brothers workshop- which was amazing- I learned much more about monster faces, and how it’s important to consider the morphology of the face when doing face painting. I also got the great tip of keeping butterflies small- that way you get the same result of a happy child but it takes less time, and Nick also painted my face as the Troll princess for the party that took place that night.

Then, at the fantasy workshop for advanced face painters, I learned of new ways to do blending and some more monster designs.

My Tips for Workshop are These:
-always bring a paper and a pen and write anything new- so you can look at it later.
-try to bring a camera to take pictures.
-experience and be braver- the workshop is a good place to practice any new technique. Try new color combinations and new products so you can decide what’s right for you.
-look at the process rather than the result. Try to look at blending and line technique, and fish for parts of the design you like. You can merge teardrops from 1 design, color combinations from another one, and details from a third design to come up with a new design of your own.
-look at the workshop as a place that can boost your creativity, and look at the techniques of the other participants as well, if you can. You can always learn from anyone, so keep your eyes open.
-If you have something you’d like to learn- ask the teacher and don’t be shy.
Learning by the web is nice, but when you see it in reality, it boosts confidence and creativity, at least for me.
Of course the festival was such an amazing experience, and I was happy to go to the finals of brush and sponge. As last year the face painting competition was great and the bodypainting competition includes facepainting as well, so there were a lot of interesting creations.

Advanced Studies Face Painting Course. This six hour hands-on progressive face painting course is being offered as part of the Advanced Studies Camp in the Performance Arts and lead by Marcela Murad. It includes instruction on brush and sponge techniques, working with glitter powders and glitter tattoos plus lots of designing ideas that will help you take your face painting to new levels.

We just recently started this jam (last month) and hope to meet some other artists from the area as we go along. We had an artist and a twister form Frederick last month come out and we all had a great time. The space is not huge ( bring a smalll kit?) , but adequate, with room enough to set up on their tables and create. The clientele are generally up for being experimented on. We used to paint there regularly last summer so they are pretty amenable. You can bring henna/ jagua/glitter/mica tatts to practice too, they really love that. We were allowed to accept tips last time and we basically had whoever painted the tipper to keep their tips. They have GREAT coffee and some lite sandwich fare (also really good), so come out if you can. We will be trying to do this the first Friday of each month.

Fancy a qualification in painting funny faces?

The country’s first accredited course in face painting has been set up on Wearside for students to brush up their skills.

Washington woman Karen Routledge, an education and funding consultant, has teamed up with Sunderland Community Voluntary Service (CVS), to deliver the course for the Open College Network.

Karen, who has been face painting for fun for 20 years, was holding a training course in fund-raising when one of the women asked if she would go along to a community group.

She said: “I thought she meant would I go along and do some face painting for an event, but then she said that actually she wanted me to teach the others how to face paint.”

Since then Karen has held several sessions in the region, which have always been fully booked and has held courses in other parts of the country.

She said: “It is mainly a practical-based course providing exercises in the art itself and proves that everyone can face paint successfully and have fun, too.

“Although mainly designed for community groups and schools the course is also attracting bookings from businesses, parents and individuals wishing to pursue face painting as a career.”

As part of the course each delegate will receive a professional face painting kit for more than 700 faces including paints, brushes, sponges and display photographs.

All practising is done on child-size model heads during the day-long course, which is open for ages 14 and over.

Karen is planning the next course to take place in Washington on Saturday, December 8, and will be doing another course at Sunderland CVS centre in the New Year.

The course costs £99 including the Open College Network Accreditation and Certificate and the professional face painting kit, which is worth about £60.

The UK Face & Body Art Convention

The UK Face painting & Body Art Convention is the biggest gathering of face painters in the UK. It’s a great place to learn all the latest face painting techniques and see live demonstrations to further your face painting skills. The World Body Face Painting Festival 16th – 22nd July

The World Body Painting Festival is the first of its kind in the world and has become the Mecca of Body Painting. It will be held in Seeboden, Austria from the 16th – 22nd July this year.

If you’re hearing about this for the first time, its probably too late to get tickets or plan a trip to Austria. But if you really love face and body painting, then maybe you should think about going next year!

The body painting work at the event is of the highest artistic quality and artists from over 40 countries will be there to show off their work and to compete in the body painting world championships. The world champions are chosen in the 3 main categories – Brush/Sponge – Airbrush and – Special Effects, as well as in one special category, the night contest for UV effects.
