Agostino – Why We Paint Our Face & Body Video

by Philadelphia Tivoli · 14 comments

“Before Cave Walls” is a lecture by internationally renowned face & body painting artist Christopher Agostino about why we paint our face and body. Christopher is one of my all time favorite artists in this field, and I think you’ll find this video VERY interesting and inspiring!!

christopher’s art ads a level of spirituallity to what we do. he leaves one with the same breathless feeling one feels looking at masterpieces hanging in a museum.

Christophers art is different. The first time I saw him I didn’t care for his style. The next convention I saw him at, he started to grow on me and now I really appreciate his work and style. I love to hear him tell the history thru art and the human body, Christopher, your great, keep it up, hope to see you again some day at the International Face Painting convention.

That was really amazing and gave me a wonderful feeling about what I do, and even tho I am a history buff (to put it mildly) and have always been aware of the ancient art of body and face painting, I never really put it together how this must be instilled in our DNA, and no that wonderful it makes us feel so joyful to do it…Thanks for sharing this amazing video.

I met Chris Agostino in 2002, his work is a reflection of his intimacy with the history of bodyart. Having seen many, many artists since still leads me back to his work. His work has a power to me, that is unmatched, it has so much depth and meaning…it truly transforms.

Thanks for posting this. I think everyone would benefit from seeing Agostino’s beautiful work and learning more about his philosophy. I definitely agree that face painting can be a spiritual act, and that humanity doesn’t just make art; art helps make humanity. I don’t entirely agree that face painting removes humanity; rather it blurs the edge of individuality. Philosophers and even quantum physicists have said that on some level, we are all one; I think that while body painting can be very egotistic or even commercial (i.e. KISS), it can also help us let go of ego and transcend to a greater sense of unity with all life.

I agree Alana, clowning (character acting eg. Fairies or clowns etc) is a part of that… it connects to all, it makes is unified in strange but wonderful way. It is magic! We share that magic by painting and transforming ourselves and the people we paint. Very enlightening video. Thanks so much for sharing, Shazz

I enjoyed this video. I have often watched the children see their faces in the mirror and bounce from the chair into character. Thanks for sharing this clip, as it has explained how the painting magically changes the attitude and the very confidence of a person into a socially different ‘character’ in their own eyes. This has helped me decide to give encouragement to the child as they leave the chair…Spiderrman..go rescue!I Butterfly..explore the world! Iwould attend this workshop!!

This is my very first blog response, so bear with me.
The Agostino video is wonderful. He makes it look effortless, but I believe that’s the sign of someone great at their job.
I’ve been making my living as an artist (face painting, balloon animals, magic shows, murals, stained glass, window painting) for the past 23 years. I’ve just finally gotten into body painting. I really like it! Even though it is really a phyical workout. Your painting tips and info are very helpful. They have inspired a lot of new ideas and designs for me.
Thank you so much, Vanessa
