Since I'm in Alberta Canada, and we have crazy hygiene standards here, I've decided to go with liquid face paints. I would squeeze just enough for one child (small pea for each color used) and go for it. If it dries up before you're done, just add another small pea to your pallet (my pallet is stainless steel, so I can wipe down with alcohol between each child). So far, I'm thinking the above is about the most sane way of keeping everything clean and in accordance to the guidelines we have here.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your comments,
glad to know you're having fun!

To Hayley, try only putting enough paint on your pallette for each child, that way you won't have to worry about it drying up. It all comes down to estimation and practice.

Also, Derivan paints -- They're not my fav, but they're cheap, have nice bright colors and are totally safe to use. But I'd rather Snazaroo or Paradise/Mehron.

Kind Regards,

Philadelphia Tivoli

Hi Philadelphia,
You must be tired of me! I'm just wondering with your floating, you use a pallette on your video. This is how I do most of my art work(thats not done on a body part!) on a wet pallette. But my problem is when I have a few children to paint, and my pots of paint are not big enough to fit my brush into and my pallette would dry before I got to use it all.(my paints are in tubes and I guess most of the time I am only using no more than 3 or 4 colours at a time. So how do you do all the side loading with all the different colours? I hope that made some sense!?
I bought the derivan brand of face paints and I wish I hadn't have as I'm sure the products you use are of much finer quality.

I love to face paint and look at all the new ideas you have. It looks so easy and when I offer to paint at parties, I get a brain freeze...my mind goes blank and then I go home and kick myself. I did have a few successes at my own kids' parties and the way you do them makes anyone THINK they could do it - keep up the good work. I love to watch you at play.

Very good thanks Philadelphia and Heather. Another simple but effective design you could paint on any part of the body, great to get the double loading technique out there, keep them coming.
(Just a thought, is it possible to have the camera angle more front on to make it easier to see the finished effect?)

Hi guys,

Thank you for all your comments, its great to hear from you all!

To Elizabeth, about painting the bud, I've never had that request before, but I guess I'd just paint maybe 3 or 4 fat vertical teardrop shapes, close together the petals in the middle being the biggest and the ones on the outside would be thinner to give a 3D look.

To Arvis an Ventura...aren't you 2 clever cookies!? I did play the 'Flower duet' in this video just for fun, and to see if anybody noticed...so thanks for noticing the extra work I put in for fun :-)

To Donna, about knowing how much to put on...its just practice! The more you work with your paints the easier it is to estimate.

Happy Face Painting,

Philadelphia Tivoli

Hi Philidelphia,

I'm fairly new to facepainting and have found your guides and videos to be very helpful. I especially like the videos because I'm a visual learner and your videos make it easy to learn new techniques, like watching over your shoulder. Keep up to good work!

I like double-loading the brush! Since I'm also a musician, I love the fact that you played "Flower Song" in the background of your flower video! Cute!

I wasn't really crazy about the flower. But I liked the double-loaded brush technique. I love your videos. They help me so much.

I do many other kinds of painting and my grandsons wanted to do some painting and my youngest one came over with a bag full of rocks. We are going to be painting rocks and I do think that some of your techniques and tips will also work for painting many things. I will let you know how we make out. They love to do them and put them in my garden along with my plants, it makes for quite a colorful garden when they are all finished and it gives us something to do together and I love that bonding moment. Thanks for all the tips and I love the idea that I can not only use them with the face painting but with many of my other hobbies as well. Thanks again Philadelphia, keep them coming still holding my breath for the army tanks and boy items to paint on the cheeks or the arms.

Hello Phildelphia: I enjoyed the Flower instruction. The step-bystep demonstration was clear and to the point(As they say--Ha!! Ha!!). Pardon the pun as I am a clown. Thank you very much. Larry

Hi Philadelphia
Just been watching your double loading brush technique for a painting flowers. I also handpaint on china and often paint flowers and foliage with two and sometimes three colours loaded but had never thought about doing the same with face painting!
The only thing I have done with multi colours is a quick rainbow by painting the seven colours in stripes onto a square piece of sponge and then dragging the sponge in an arc across the forehead down the side of the face onto the cheek, Then paint a white fluffy cloud on the end of the rainbow on the forehead and little black pot with some gole glitter on th cheek end. It's quick once you have the sponge set up and you can use it several times or just top up the colours and really effective.
I love your website and lokk forward to getting your tips and idead too. Thanks Philadelphia - you are briliant!

Hi Philadelphia,
Thank you so much for the flower design & double loading technique. It will really help me at the Bug & Bud festival this month. The flower came out so pretty. I also have the same question as Bonita how would I do a bud in stead of an open flower? Thanks again

Hi Bonita,

Thanks for leaving a comment :-)

I did use Snazaroo cake paint, I tranferred the paint from the cakes to my plastic palette by adding a little water and loading my brush with the paint and then placing it on the palette. Another way to do this is using a palette knife to scrape a dry cake paint and then placing that on a palette.

Happy Face Painting,

The design is pretty and the double loading technique makes it look really great... how would you do a 'bud' for the flower?

Also, did you use Snazaroo? How did you transfer the paint from the cake to the palette?
